Photos : How Nigeria's Tribal Monarchs Still Live In Lavish Royal Splendour, 50 Years After Being Stripped Of Their Powers

With their brightly coloured robes, ornate thrones and legions of flunkeys attending every whim, they seem every bit the archetypal African kings.

Nigeria's traditional Monarchs may have been stripped of their powers half a century ago, but they appear to have lost little of their regal pomp and splendour as this fascinating series of portraits shows.

Photographer George Osodi toured the west African country extensively for a series of photographs entitled 'Kings of Nigeria' which is due to be exhibited at London's Bermondsey Project in October.

Alhaji Ado Abdullahi Bayero -Emir of Kano
As a well-known and celebrated Nigerian photographer, Mr Osodi was granted rare access to the palaces and throne rooms of these hereditary rulers who now serve as living repositories of Nigeria's enormous cultural heritage.

He told Al-Jazeera: 'There are frequent clashes among different ethnic groups.

Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman – Emir of Katsina
Lots of people have lost trust in their identity. I felt it was important that we see this diverse culture as a point of unity instead of seeing it as something that should divide us as a nation.

'The easiest way I could approach this was to look at the monarchy structure in the country because they are closer to the people than the governors.'

Deinmowuru Donokoromo III – Pere of Isaba
HM Wilson Ojakovo Oghoghovwe Oharisi III – Ovie of Ughelli
Oba Oyetunji Jimoh Olanipekun Larooyell – Ataoja of Osogbo
Oba Okunade Sijuwade – Ooni of Ife
Obi James Ikechukwu Anyasi II- Obi of the Idumuje Unor kingdom
Benjamin Ikenchuku Keagborekuzi I – Dein of Agbor
Oba Uku Akpolokpolo Erediauwa I – Oba of Benin Kingdom
While their ancestors ruled over vast tracts of Africa, following the abolition of the monarchy in 1963 the regional monarchs were stripped of all their constitutional powers.

But far from fading into obscurity, they mostly remain popular leaders and are held in great regard by their hundreds of thousands of loyal subjects.

And despite lacking any formal powers they continue to wield considerable influence and serve as unofficial intermediaries between their subjects and the Nigerian government.

Low patronage hits newly opened Ibadan shoprite

The first day it opened it was like a tourist site, but the Ibadan people have since found their way back to their local markets. Barely a month after the grand opening of Shoprite at Heritage Cocoa Mall, on Oba Adebimpe Road, Dugbe, Ibadan, Oyo State, the retail store has been hit with low patronage. The number of Ibadan people who go there to buy things have reduced drastically. Some residents blame it on the prices of goods at shoprite. While some say it's cheaper to buy some goods from their local markets than from shoprite, others say though it's cheaper to buy from shoprite than the stores in their neighborhood, the difference isn't much and the transport fare to go to shoprite and back isn't worth it, so they stick to shops in their area.

The most patronized commodity at shoprite Ibadan is the freshly baked bread,.people go there a lot on the weekends.just to look around.

Simon Cowell is expecting a baby with New York socialite Lauren Silverman.A close friend of Cowell told MailOnline that Lauren, who is technically still married to real estate mogul Andrew Silverman, a close friend of Cowell's, had revealed that she wants to marry the star just a few weeks ago.

Lauren and real estate mogul Andrew have been long friends with Cowell and have enjoyed holidays with him for the past few years. But it wasn't until Lauren and Andrew ended their relationship that her friendship with Cowell turned into romance, around a year ago.

Lauren and Andrew

A friend of Lauren's told of MailOnline: 'Lauren loves Simon, she says that she wants to marry him. And with the baby, she's going the right way about it! But I think this could be really good for Simon.'Another friend confirmed the baby news and said 'yes, all true'.Lauren, 36, is said to be 'around 10 weeks along' in the pregnancy, according to Us Weekly magazine. However, Cowell and Lauren's situation is made more complicated by the fact that she is still technically married to Andrew. The source told 'Lauren and Andrew have been unhappy in their marriage for some time, and their divorce has been in the works for a while. As their marriage deteriorated, she and Simon became close.'

Cowell, 53, and Lauren have been seeing each for at least a year, according to friends, and were even seen viewing houses together in Los Angeles earlier this year.

In January, the pair were even seen lounging together on the deck of the yacht alongside Cowell's ex-fiancée Mezhgan Hussainy and Andrew.

Nigerian Troops Begin Withdrawal From Mali Today

Culled from pmnewsnigeria

Nigeria will today begin withdrawal of some of its troops from Mali because they are needed back home, where the country is battling Boko Haram insurgency, spokesman of the defence headquarters, Brigadier General Chris Olukolade said in a statement.

It was not clear how many troops would be pulled from the west African nation, where Nigeria currently has some 1,000 troops.

“The defence headquarters will tomorrow (Wednesday) commence the withdrawal of some Nigerian troops from the Peace Support Operations in Mali,” it said.

“The troops are mainly those not accommodated in the structures of the newly formed United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). They are to join the ongoing internal security operations in the country.”

The action followed “the rehatting and takeover” by the UN of the mission from African-led International Support Mission in Mali (AFISMA),” it stated.

“Some of the soldiers will be redeployed immediately,” it added.

Nigeria will sustain its commitment and contribution to the Mali operation in other forms, such as input of “sizeable men and materials” to the mission, it said, without giving further details.

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara, chair of the 15-nation west African bloc ECOWAS, told reporters earlier this month that the withdrawal was because Nigeria needed its soldiers back home.

“It’s because of the domestic situation,” Ouattara said after an ECOWAS summit in the Nigerian capital Abuja.

However, a military source had said troops would pull out because the country, which has the biggest military in west Africa, felt “shabbily treated” under the new UN force in Mali.

A Nigerian commanded the previous African-led force in the country, but the UN mission is being headed by a Rwandan.
The UN mission integrates more than 6,000 west African soldiers into its ranks and is charged with ensuring security during and after July 28 elections in Mali.

It is to grow to 11,200 troops, plus 1,400 police, by the end of the year.

Nigeria approved the deployment of 900 troops with the capacity to increase to 1,200 under the previous African-led force.

Mother Catches Teacher Under Her Daughter's Bed

A SCHOOLGIRL’S suspicious mum surprised her by coming home early — and was horrified to look under the teen’s bed and find her MATHS TEACHER.

He and the 16-year-old had sneaked back to the house on the last day of the term when the mother suddenly turned up.

She began searching the house for a boy — and was aghast when she discovered the 35-year-old skulking under the mattress. She called cops who yesterday confirmed: “A man was arrested on suspicion of abusing a position of trust.”

A source said: “The pair had gone back to the girl’s house because they thought no one would be there.

“But the mum came home earlier than expected and caught them.

“She went into her daughter’s room and found the teacher hiding under the bed. It was a terrible shock. I think she had only come home to grab some lunch. The mum went berserk.”

The teacher — arrested and quizzed for several hours — was last night on police bail over the antics in Bolton, Gtr Manchester. He cannot be identified for legal reasons. The school head — whose staff were last year rated “outstanding” by Ofsted — refused to say if the teacher had been suspended.

Photo : House wife pierces neigbour's heart with Knife during scuffle in Lagos

SATURDAY, June 22,2013, will for a long time remain indelible in the memory of Godwin Olah, 37, following an incident that claimed the life of his 28- year-old wife, Stella, during a row with a neighbour  identified as Stella Omoigiafo Gilbert (31). The suspect, a mother of one, allegedly pierced the heart of the deceased, a mother of three aged between six and three, with a knife after a scuffle in their compound.

The grieving husband of the deceased who hails from Obudu local Government Area of Cross River State, Godwin, told Crime Alert at their number 59, Ojora Street, Ajegunle, Lagos residence that the suspect also inflicted severe injuries on his wife’s hand before piercing her heart resulting to her death. Amidst tears, he narrated his ordeal since the untimely death of his wife.

His story: ”It happened that on June 22, 2013, at about 6pm, one of my sisters came calling on us. I decided to carry one small bench at the front of a neighbour’s house for the visitor to sit inside our room. Immediately, Stella, our neighbour, rushed out of her room and accosted me, asking why I should carry the bench inside. The owner of the bench, on hearing our argument, came out and asked her to let us be, but she refused, instead she went inside, brought out hot water and poured on us. I reasoned that if I engage in a fight with her, it might result to some serious consequences, so, I went to the police station at Ajaromi and reported the case.

“On getting back to the house, I saw my wife lying on the corridor in front of our room. I shook her but no response came from her, and the lady that engaged her in a fight was nowhere to be found. Hence, I went back to the station the second time to report of her death. The Police sent an officer to accompany me and see things for herself.  The officer came, saw the lifeless body of my wife on the corridor and we went back to the station where she made her report.

The Police also requested that I get a report from the General Hospital here in Ajegunle. I took the body of my wife there and she was confirmed dead on arrival. There after, with the help of some good Samaritans around, I took her body to the Naval hospital mortuary, but she was rejected because we did not go with a police report.  I brought her back and laid her on the floor in our room until the next morning.

Then, I went back to the police station and was given a police van to convey her to Lagos Island mortuary. She has been at the morgue for a month and three days now. Since then, our children have been sleeping at their aunt’s house, I go there every night to pass the night with them because they can’t sleep if I am not there with them.”

Crime Alert gathered from an eye witness that after the accused poured hot water on Godwin Olah and his visiting sister, his wife went to her room to accost her on why she should treat her husband and sister in-law in such manner, a fight ensued between both women and in the process, the accused tried to drag the deceased to the stove where she was cooking to burn her, but when she discovered she could not drag Stella Godwin (the deceased) to the fire, she brought out a knife and pierced through her right arm and her heart.

“Stella died as a result of the knife wound on her heart; the fight was so fierce that we all took off, returning only to see Stella Godwin lying in a pool of her blood on the corridor in front of their room,” the eye witness said.

Another neighbour also told Crime Alert on condition of anonymity that there have been a no- love -lost relationship between the two neighbours.

“Before that incident, both neighbours had lived like cat and rat in this compound. They quarrelled at the slightest misunderstanding. I wish they listened to us, this would have been averted.”
Tracing the genesis of the quarrel between his family and the suspect, the husband of the victim also said he fell out with the accused who also shared the same first name (Stella) with his deceased wife, after he prevented her from using a knife on her (the suspect) sister during a scuffle. “I have lived in this compound for 20 years now. I was here when she rented her room. We lived as good neighbours, she was best of friends with my wife. It wasl the day I stopped the lady from using a knife to inflict injuries on her sister during a fight that she saw me, my wife and our children as enemies, “ he stated.

It was gathered that the body of the deceased has been conveyed to her home town in Obudu- Akwa-Ibom state for burial; while the accused Stella Omoigiafo Gilbert was remanded in prison custody after she was arraigned at the magistrate court in Ebute Metta.

"I try to deny that I love you because I’m thinking it’s too early to love you when I don’t know how you are in the outside world,”

Then Angelo replied:
"To be honest, I’m also kind of scared of knowing you on the outside”

Beverly later told Angelo Personal stuffs about her life including how she used to sleep with men for money to help her family and how she once had an abortion.

Then she asked him a question he was all too happy to answer.
“Can you marry a person like me?” she asked almost shy.

Photos : Governor Fashola Launches Nigeria’s First E-ticketing for BRT Buses

Mr Babatunde Fashola, Lagos State governor, yesterday launched the new electronic ticketing (e-ticket) system for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses under the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to bring world best practice in transportation to the state.

Fashola who launched the e-ticket system, first of its kind in the country at the BRT CMS Terminal in Marina, said with the digitalised system it was now possible for commuters to pay as low as N20 for short distance journey.

According to him, the introduction was to make the transportation system via BRT buses more efficient and fast for both operators and users.

The governor represented by his deputy, Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, saidusers of BRT buses with the e-ticket can pay less for travel time as well as make the process of ticketing more user friendly.

He said, “We have over the years strived to ensure that we have very effective and reliable transportation system on the road, on water and on rail system. From the event of today, what we have done is to make road infrastructure more attractive, more reliable and more efficient for those who chose to use this service, especially those at the grassroots who will make use of this from today.

“It will give users the opportunity to save, instead of paying N120 or N70, you can pay as low as N20 for a journey from Mile 12 to Ojota, you can also buy a week or a month worth on your card depending on your travel time which is more effective and makes the process efficient and fast.”

Fashola explained that the e-ticket system is a step in the right direction as the state government continually seeks to improve its intra-model transportation system.

According to him, “We have looking forward to attaining the transportation system that obtains in developed countries and as we are developing our model befitting of a mega city state”.

Earlier, Managing Director of LAMATA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola said the e-ticketing system is being developed not just for the BRT buses but for other means of transportation like ferries and trains that would take off soon in the state.

“This e-ticketing model is to make it easier for passengers to be able to travel at ease making use of this system. It is equitable, simple, easier for collection, easy for control of operators, it is attractive to both users also for the administrators as well as the operators.

“It has intra-modal abilities which at the end of the day you can use it for not just the buses, you can also use it for ferry and on train eventually and it has a simple pairing and sharing methodology”, Mobereola added.

LAMATA boss said each of the BRT buses is equipped with an automated fare collection system that the commuters can use when they embark on their journey to when they disembark from the bus.

Photo : Woman Sets 11-Year-Old Maid Ablaze Over Piece Of Meat

Culled from Vanguard

Policemen at Bode Thomas division of Lagos State command, Tuesday, arrested a woman who allegedly set her 11-year-old house maid ablaze in Surulere area of Lagos, for stealing a piece of meat from her pot of soup.

The maid identified as Ita Bassey-Eno who reportedly escaped death by the whiskers, is currently at the Burns and Trauma Centre of the Gbadaga General Hospital, with doctors battling to save her life.

Although her mistress, a staff nurse at an undisclosed hospital in Surulere, Mrs Nkese Iroakazi, reportedly denied the allegation at the police station, the ailing girl was said to have managed to state that she allegedly poured kerosene on her before striking a stick of matches to set her on fire.

The incident, as gathered, occurred last Saturday at 7, Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, after  Ita rushed out of  the apartment with fire on her, apparently in an attempt to plunge into a gutter. Unfortunately,  she reportedly fell before she could get to  the gutter.

One of the residents was said to have succeeded in putting out the fire with the aid of a fire extinguisher, before she was rushed to the hospital.

Eyewitness account

A resident who simply identified herself as Morakinyo told Vanguard: “I was just alighting from the bus when I saw people gathered in front of the building. When I got there, I saw Ita whom we all call Eno on the floor. Then, the flame had been put out.

“Two men who attempted to carry her into a car could not because the skin at that time had peeled off. They had to get a slab, placed her on it and rushed her to the hospital. From what I gathered, the girl has spent barely one month in Lagos before the incident.

“She was brought from her village in Akwa Ibom State last month alongside another girl called Happiness. Since then, we have not seen either of them going to school.

“We heard that while Happiness was in the sitting room, there was a cry from Ita in the kitchen and before she (Happiness) knew what was happening, Ita rushed out of the kitchen and straight to the road shouting for help.

“How could someone who has children of her own treat another’s  like this? It was even the residents that alerted policemen who came to pick Mrs Iroakazi.”

When Vanguard visited the hospital, Tuesday, a doctor who spoke on condition of anonymity  expressed fear about the  victim’s condition, revealing that she suffered  95 per cent  burns.

“It will take a miracle for her to survive. In any case, we are trying all we can to ensure she gets back on her feet. That will entail some surgeries because her private part was badly damaged.

“Currently, she wears pampers and that area needs immediate surgery after the injuries would have healed.”

Ita was sighted with bandage all over her body, except her face and feet. When a nurse approached her to administer the day’s treatment, she groaned in pains.

As at 3 p.m yesterday, police sources told Vanguard that the suspect would be transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba  for further investigation.

The Trial Of Three Lebanese Nationals Facing 24 Counts Of Terrorism, Money Laundering Begins

The federal government, Monday commenced the trial of three Lebanese nationals charged with six charges of terrorism-related offences at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The prosecutors also filed fresh charges, sixteen counts of money-laundering and illegal importation of goods, among other crimes, against the accused persons. They pleaded not guilty. The prosecution called three witnesses, who were mainly officials of the Department of State Security Service (DSS), to testify in the case.

The foreign nationals – Mustapha Fawaz (49), Abdallah Thahini (48) and Talal Ahmad Roda (51) – were charged along with their companies – Amigo Supermarket and Wonderland Amusement Park Resort.

Among the new charges filed against them, that they conspired and engaged in unlawful importation of prohibited firearms between 1988 and 2008 in Kano.

The prosecution witnesses, who was hooded for security reasons, told the court how they investigated the case and recovered arms and ammunition from the accused persons’ premises.

The first witness identified as DSS1 told the court that he coordinated the investigation and that the accused made voluntary statements where they admitted being members of the militant group, Hezbollah – which has been labelled a terrorist organisation by the United States.

The second witness identified as DSS2, led the team that conducted searches on the Wonderland Park and Amigo Supermarket, where they recovered arms and ammunition.

He, however, stunned the court when, upon being asked to read the inventory of the items recovered from the two premises, (about 45 items) most of the items, except three, were not related to arms and ammunition.

They were common items such computer accessories, SIM cards, travelling documents, camera, and identity card, among others.

The third witness identified as DSS3, told the court how one of the accused persons, Thahini, was arrested at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano with $61,170 while allegedly trying to leave the country.

The trial resumes at noon today (Tuesday), to enable the prosecution file and serve the defence copies of written statements of its remaining five witnesses.

"If my husband cheats, I will castrate him' - Actress Uche Jombo

In this interview with Sam Olatunji, Actress Uche Jombo speaks on cheating and new movie ‘Unconditional’.

What is it with the celebrity kids on your new movie, ‘Unconditional’?

We didn’t set out to use celebrity kids. I told everyone including you the age range I want and people suggested the kids. Aghahowa’s daughter has wanted to act since age 5, we auditioned Chigozie, and she did well and got a coach to coach them. 2face’s daughter is just a drama queen. And this movie, Unconditional is not all about them, Dakore, Ruth Kadiri and I acted in it. It’s the kind of move that will touch the heart.

If your husband were to be a serial philanderer like Desmond’s character in the movie, Lies Men Tell, what will you do?

I will castrate him, he knows and believes that. To me, there is no excuse to cheat, its either you are with someone or not, and if you are tired of the person, please accord the person decency of respect by saying it’s over. Don’t go making someone look stupid. The problem with me is there is no in- between.

Do you believe what you are saying or are you saying it for the purpose of this interview?

I am saying,Uche Jombo-Rodrigues doesn’t have in-between. That is the reason it takes me long time to make a decision or take a stand on something, but when I do, that is it. There is no excuse not to honour an agreement you have made, this doesn’t have anything to do with this interview. It is the principle that guides me. It is not just about marriage, it’s how I conduct my relationships, its either it is this or that, if that is mymind-set in a relationship, you should know that for marriage it’ll be 150%. There is no room for cheating.

So you believe your husband will or should not cheat on you?

I don’t have control over what someone will do, I’m not God. I’m talking about me, how I conduct things. It’s not an option that it will happen, I will not tolerate cheating.

Are you saying you will not forgive the man who cheats on you and is manly enough to say I’m sorry?

If you are in that situation Sam, oh God! You are going to slave for me for life. And do you know any man that will want to slave for a woman for life, answer?

Is it true you are older than your husband and the man you dated before him?

I have never dated or married someone I was older than in my life. If you have the illusion of someone’s age, that is your business, and I am even too mature for my age. That is the problem, because men of my age are ‘small boys’ around me, I can’t date them. I am someone who has to become a mother to some of my siblings at the age of 14. Because you are an under-achiever does not mean I should play down on my achievement. If age is the yard stick for you to succeed, you should not judge people with it, I don’t have an apology. If I’m learning from people who are older than me that is because I don’t hang out with my age mates; I don’t think there is anything else you want to teach me, and if you want to judge me by the people I hang out with or by when I started my hustle, where the hell were you at that time?  What really matters to me is that people who know me during my not-too-proud days are so proud that, this is me now. I have come far, it’s something I’m grateful for, and I couldn’t have even written it better if it were a story.

Is Wande Coal Leaving Mavin Records?

The rumours keep getting louder and assumptions turning into reality, there are strong indications that Wande Coal is parting ways with his current record label Mavin Records.

Wande, inside sources tell us has been contemplating a move now for months and has already launched his own entertainment outfit Black Diamond Entertainment. Sources close to the talented singer tell NET that Wande wants to be in total control of his music career and will be releasing his long awaited second album under his own imprint.

Wande has continually postponed his upcoming album for reasons he’s never told us; in April he promised us a June 6, 2013 release. It’s close to two months now.

Even though both parties aren’t speaking, their actions seem to be doing the talking – Wande released a new single ‘Kilaju‘ today (July 30, 2013) under his Black Diamond Entertainment (the ubiquitous Mavin Records logo is missing from the official cover art). More so, Don Jazzy who seems to be omnipresent on social network Twitter has not mentioned Wande Coal, tweeted or retweeted anything related to the release.

The last five years have been quite rocky for Mr Wande, after dropping his very successful solo debut ‘Mushin 2 Mohits‘ in 2008, Wande has found himself in troubled waters – in 2010, he ‘went global’ when a picture of him naked leaked on the internet.

Despite all of this, Wande has managed to release chart topping singles, trending globally.

The demand from his ever-thirsty fans has remained constant all through the years, and he seems he now wants to take his future into his own hands.

'The Night I Slept With Davido Was The Hottest Ever' - Kenyan Musician, Pendo

A lot has been said concerning socialite/bad girl Pendo, Davido and their alleged romp this past weekend when the superstar was in town.

Well we want to put ALL the rumours to rest. First of all, we have the interview that has everyone up in arms that Davido denied Pendo’s existence. And keep your eyes open for more on that.

Secondly, I personally decided to call up Pendo and ask her what was the REAL deal. So here is our conversation (partly redacted to get right down to all the juicy parts) about everything.

So what is all this wahala about Davido blocking you off of his facebook?

Pendo : If people had done even a little research, they would Davido does not even have a Facebook account. I NEVER said I was in touch with him through Facebook. I got in touch with him through a good friend of his *redacted*  and that’s where everything started. He did the intro.
So, seriously, did you sleep with Davido?

Pendo: Errrrrrrrrrrm (laughs cheekily) (There is IRREFUTABLE proof that Pendo did spend the night with Nigerian superstar, if you want to see it plead with her on twitter @LoveStaicey to release it.) In the meantime, have this picture of Davido, topless, in his hotel room from his personal instagram. Maybe Pendo took it # troll

So why did you do this? Do you do this for money?

Pendo: (Laughs) No, I didn’t get money from him. I didn’t WANT money from him. I did it simply cuz I find him hot and he is pretty legit in the music industry in Africa. Yeah, I am attracted by his talent, his fame, his power, but honestly, who isn’t? And people are talking so much because a lot of women wanted to be in my shoes, but were not. I’m not afraid to go after what I want. That’s just me. And I am unapologetic for it. I am content that I got what I wanted -which was to know him- and I guess it just naturally progressed from there…

So was this a one time thing then?

Pendo: No, I would do it again. Gladly. I don’t regret it at all.
Of course you know now I am gonna ask about the “D”. Free reign, choose your own words to describe it.

Pendo: He was perfect.

Nooooooooo, more than that. DESCRIPTION.

Pendo: (Laughing) Ok, ok. Errrrrrrrrrrm, he is much better than your “average Kenyan”. He is big. Both length and width. (Giggles) And best part is he REALLY knows what he is working with.

Haha, so you loved ALL OF HIM. (SN: Hehe, see what I did there?)

Pendo: (Giggles) Ha, you won’t let this go will you. Haha, no seriously though, he has CRAZY moves, he kept it fresh for a couple hours. I am impressed. Definitely the best…(hesitates) Ok maybe not the best I ever had, but he is up there.

So was this a one night stand or will you be seeing him again?

Pendo: Davido is not only a good lover but a gentleman. Not only did he not publicise the affair, but he left me with some personal mementos to remember him. I don’t think a one night stand does that. Plus there is still communication going on. I’m not saying we are dating, but we are definitely still talking. He did not “hit it and quit it”.

Watch this space to see if Pendo goes to visit Davido in Nigeria. A little birdie tells me that this may be a high possibility right now. And seriously, wouldn’t a Pendo/Davido dalliance be so Rihanna/ChrisBrown-esque (bad girls get the bad boys and they don’t give a damn.?

John Obi Mikel : What Went Wrong for Nigeria Midfielder at Chelsea?

Culled from

This article looks at Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, exploring the uncertainty that surrounds his current role at Chelsea, and recalling the future that was once expected of him.

If things had been going well for John Obi Mikel we probably wouldn’t be having this conversation.

The rumours linking the Nigerian central midfielder to a whole plethora of clubs have been conspicuous in their regularity this summer and even as we enter August, his future remains uncertain.

In principle, the 26 year old should be entering into an exciting phase of his career. At this age his game should have entered maturity and he should be looking towards cementing his place as one of Europe’s finest midfielders.

However, while his contemporaries are dominating contests in the highest arenas of the game, Mikel still faces questions about where exactly his best position is.

The return of Jose Mourinho to Chelsea could easily have been considered a reason for the Nigerian to be optimistic. It was Mourinho, after all, who procured Mikel from under the noses of Manchester United at such great expense, and it was Mourinho who saw in Mikel all of the potential required to become the natural heir to Claude Makelele.

One might expect that the Portuguese boss would therefore relish the prospect of resuming work on his project, on picking up the pieces with Mikel and continuing the transformation of a player who was once such a tantalising prospect.

The more cynical might suggest that Mourinho, in fact, is most at fault for the current predicament Mikel finds himself in.

It is easy to forget, but John Obi hasn’t always been the lumbering, bumbling defensive midfielder often spotted waddling around the centre of the pitch at Stamford Bridge. Once he was a glorious attacking talent, striding around the turf with a near-delirious uproar.

Back in 2005, at the FIFA Youth Championships, Mikel outshone stars such as Sergio Aguero and Cesc Fabregas and was, with the exception of the imperious Lionel Messi, the outstanding attacking talent of the tournament.

Imagine that the next time you see him huffing and puffing in the Premier League, clumsily letting the ball bounce off him, or struggling to keep pace with another nimble attacking talent.

I exaggerate of course, but upon moving to England, the Mikel I describe was lost for good.

Mourinho, aware of the attacking menace already provided by Frank Lampard and Michael Essien; realising the imminent need of replacing defensive stalwart Makelele; seduced, possibly, by the pervading paradigm of the imposing West African midfielder, sought to redevelop the Nigerian into a far less provocative talent.

It soon became apparent that Makelele was impossible to replace; or if not replace, replicate.

Mikel lacked the tactical nous and defensive discipline of his predecessor and didn’t possess the pace or dynamism of his successors across the Premier League, men like Mohamed Diame, Yaya Toure and Victor Wanyama, who have once again moved the goalposts and taken the game beyond Mikel.

Fascinatingly, Nigeria’s recent revival and a return to the top of the continental tree after 19 years of underachievement, has provided Mikel with an ideal environment to demonstrate that once-prodigal ability that had appeared to be lost in the ether.

Stephen Keshi’s remodelling of the Super Eagles, filling the team with young, inexperienced and domestic-based talent, made a man out of Mikel.

The inconsistent, precocious wunderkind suddenly became a player of influence and responsibility.

Surrounded by youngsters, Mikel became the crucial component, the central fulcrum of Keshi’s elect. At both the triumphant Cup of Nations and the slightly less convincing Confederations Cup earlier in the summer, he was a majestic, imperious force in the heart of the side.

With tantalising touches and expert teamwork, Mikel consistently and relentlessly drove his team forward, brought his teammates into play and demonstrated the creativity and vision that won him so many plaudits as a teenager.

His goal against Uruguay, all poise, balance and ferocity, was, for a single, solitary second, a window back in time, a glimpse at why Mikel was once announced as the successor to Jay-Jay Okocha. Such a vivid, explosive talent in his day.

Writing about Mikel’s terrific performances in Brazil this summer, I concluded the following:

The Nigerian now arrives at a crossroads in his career. Will he finally be able to develop into a valuable asset to Chelsea, more than merely a familiar part of the furniture, or does he require a move away to pastures new, in order to reignite a career that is stalling badly?

Even in light of interest from clubs such as Monaco, Galatasaray and Trabzonspor, it may be that Mikel’s best bet is to remain at Chelsea.

It is easy to forget how many honours the Nigerian has accumulated in West London and it may be that the return of Mourinho, a manager who has—at one time at least—valued his contribution, can inject the Nigerian with a new vitality.

If not, we may be destined to forever view Mikel’s career with regret, to remember those majestic touches simply as isolated moments and to lament the loss of the player he might have been.

41 year old woman found out she was pregnant 15 hours before she gave birth

Amanda Ross who is 41 has given birth to her first baby just 15 hours after discovering she was pregnant. She has never been pregnant before and thought she just had stomach upset when labour set in.

While shopping with her partner,Paul Dean she had been feeling bloated and blamed it on constipation and went to her local health centre where they gave her a scan - and told her she was probably seven or eight months pregnant.

She said:

‘My first reaction when they told me I was pregnant was one of sheer terror.

‘I thought "Oh my God", I could have done this ten years ago - but I’m in my 40s.

‘It was a massive shock and I still can’t believe it. It’s going to get some getting used to.’‘I had no idea I was expecting - there’d been no flutters, no cravings, no kicking, no morning sickness, no kicking, nothing.

‘We were totally unprepared for a new baby - we hadn’t even got a cotton bud.‘Thankfully our families have been really good, running around to get everything we need.’

Stunned Paul, 53, has been with Amanda for 14 years and neither of them work. He is already dad to Andrew, 34, and daughter Jessica, 32.

He said:
‘I thought ‘where the hell did that come from? She’s had no pains or cravings or stomach aches, nothing‘I’m still in shock and the reality has yet to sink in. It’s going to take some getting used to.

"I was building a house for Funke before she left' - Kehinde Oloyede

In a recent interview with Encomium magazine, Funke Akindele's husband revealed he was building a house for his wife before she ended the marriage. It's a one-storey building (uncompleted) located off Adeniji Jones in Ikeja,Lagos.

Mr Oloyede told  Encomium magazine:
"They wrote that I am a tout, from what you are seeing here now, do I look like a tout or garage boy? They also said I'm a drop out, from the way you and I have been speaking, do I speak like someone who did not go to school? I have decided to follow the advice of those who said I should not join issues with her and her supporters. I am not a celebrity. I am an estate developer. She is the star that has her career to protect and I don't want to be the one to spoil her career.
