Nigeria, Ethiopia To Clash Again

After seeing his team’s dream of playing at 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil crashing courtesy of two legged defeats in the qualifying playoffs in October and November, Coach Sewnet Bishaw of Ethiopia will have his hands full again when his Walya Ibex face Nigeria in an international friendly to prepare both countries for January’s African Nations Championship, CHAN, in South Africa.

Reports early today say Ethiopia Football Federation has requested an international friendly with the home-based Super Eagles, as they also look forward to concluding their preparations for CHAN.

Its counterpart, Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has already responded in the affirmative, and according to Brila FM radio in Lagos, Ethiopia are therefore expected to fly in on Friday, 3 January for the test game ahead of the tie scheduled for Saturday at the Abuja National Stadium.

Coach Stephen Keshi has demanded for a friendly against a national team before the team depart for South Africa on 7 January. With an international match on the table, Keshi believes an opportunity has come for him to correct whatever mistakes he has noticed in the team.

“It will be so nice to play an African team that is also preparing ahead of the tournament, which will certainly give us an opportunity to correct our mistakes at least before the start of the championship”

Nigeria is grouped alongside, Mali, Mozambique and hosts, South Africa. 16 qualified countries are participating in this 3rd edition of the tournament but Nigeria’s debut appearance after they failed to qualify for the last two editions.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s coach, Bishaw, has axed goalkeeper Sisay Bancha and defender Abebaw Butako from CHAN after they fought in Nigeria recently.

It has been reported that the two players were involved in a fight in Calabar after the country’s full international team lost 2–0 to the Super Eagles in a World Cup play-off in Calabar.

Ethiopia have however named a provisional squad of 27 players for the championship. Perennial champions St George have again provided the bulk of the squad to South Africa with eight players including skipper Degu Debebe.

The players are Alula Girma, Salahadin Bergecho, Menyahel Teshome, Adane Girma, Omed Ukri, Beyadeglegn Elyas, Mentesenot Adane, Jemal Tasew, Fasika Asfaw, Tok James, Ephrem Ashamo.

APC Drops Buhari & Picks Tambuwal As Presidential Candidate

VP zoned to South-West, Buhari, others dropped

Barring any lastminute change, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, may have endorsed the Speaker of the House of Representatives, The Right Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, as the presidential candidate of the main opposition party in the 2015 general election. National Mirror gathered that other presidential aspirants on the platform of the party, including the former Head of State. Maj.- Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (rtd.), are being persuaded to step down for Tambuwal.

As a prelude to the formal announcement of his candidature, Tambuwal has been advised to formally dump the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which provided the platform for his election into the lower chamber of the National Assembly and defect to the opposition party.

Already, findings showed that Tambuwal had agreed to the condition. Reliable sources close to the party disclose to National Mirror indicated that Tambuwal would meet the condition as soon as the House reconvenes in the New Year.

It was gathered that the leaders of APC in settling for Tambuwal considered that he possessed solid character content to sway the support of Nigerians for his candidature in the presidential election.

It was also learnt that those rooting for Tambuwal in APC were of the opinion that his integrity and pedigree were strong points over candidates of other political parties in the presidential election, especially in the likelihood that the ruling party fielded President Goodluck Jonathan.

Investigation revealed that APC leaders were persuaded by the independent disposition of Tambuwal in the management of the affairs of the House, particularly his courage to shun the interference of the leadership of PDP and the Presidency. One of the APC leaders, who spoke with our correspondent, said Tambuwal’s uncommon courage has endeared him to Nigerians.

“The leaders of APC have settled for the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2015 election.

Although the decision is not public yet but there is a consensus of opinion by our leaders that the Speaker (Tambuwal) be allowed to fly the flag of the party in the presidential election.

“Our leaders believe that the Speaker has what it takes to win the presidential election and Mr. Speaker has been told to dump his party, PDP and move into APC to enable him to scale the hurdle. Tambuwal has agreed to that and he is expected to declare for APC with some other members of the House in the first quarter of New Year.

“In deciding on Tambuwal, his originality and independence in the handling of the affairs of the House were taken into consideration. Nigerians are impressed that Tambuwal shunned entreaties by the leadership of PDP and the Presidency to make the House an appendage of the executive arm of government.

“The Speaker has no doubt endeared himself to a lot of Nigerians by his sterling leadership qualities and APC believes that such qualities are required from any Nigerian aspiring for the highest political office in the country,” added the source, who did not want his name mentioned. Buhari and other presidential aspirants on the platform of the party were being persuaded to step down for Tambuwal.

According to him, Buhari and others were made to understand that the interest of the party superseded the ambition of any individual within the party.

He added that other presidential aspirants in the party have been advised to bury their interest to enable the party present “a credible and marketable presidential candidate to Nigerians.”

“The APC is working on all the presidential candidates and they are being persuaded to step down for Tambuwal, who is considered suitable for presidential election. Already, Gen. Buhari and others have displayed uncommon understanding and they are likely to embrace and accept Tambuwal as the flag bearer of the party in the presidential election,” the source added.

A reliable source in the APC also confided in National Mirror that the leadership of the APC had zoned the presidential ticket of the party to the North while the vice-presidential ticket had also been zoned to the South-West which had in turn zoned it to the Ekiti/Ondo axis.

National Mirror reliably gathered that while a young Muslim northerner is the preferred choice, the vice-presidential candidate, will be an elderly practicing Christian. The source told National Mirror that three candidates had actually been penciled down for the vice- presidential slot in the South-West.

It was learnt that Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, who was in times past a frontrunner as likely vice- presidential candidate was knocked off with the zoning of the slot to the Ekiti/ Ondo axis of the South- West geo-political zone.

APC leaders were also of the view that a Muslim- Muslim ticket like the 1993 presidential election, where the late business mogul, M.K.O. Abiola chose a Northern Muslim, Babagana Kingibe as his running mate would not fly in today’s Nigeria.

Also not working in Fashola’s favour was the alleged frosty relationship between him and his predecessor and national leader of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was said not be comfortable with a Fashola vice presidency.

A former governor of Ekiti State and a serving governor on the region were also considered but dropped on account of their relatively “young” age.

National Mirror also reliably learnt that the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, after meeting with the leadership of the APC insisted on the choice of a “practicing Christian” as a vice presidential candidate of the party.

It is yet to be known which office would be zoned to the South East and South-South geo-political zones in the political calculations of the APC, but analysts opined that the South East may be pacified with the presidency of the Senate while the South-South may end up with the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, 29 members of the House of Representatives, National Mirror learnt authoritatively yesterday, would defect to the All Progressives Congress, APC, between January and February 2014.

A member of the House from Jigawa State, who is still in the ruling PDP, disclosed this to National Mirror yesterday. It was also gathered that about four lawmakers who have lost out with the party in Benue State have concluded plans to take the leap in January.

“Yes, we are still PDP members, but I can’t guarantee that in January we would still be there. It is only Jigawa, many other states too. We are not less than 29 moving in January,” he said.

He however, did not confirm that the Speaker, Tambuwal would defect to the APC in January. This was just as about 15,000 members of the PDP in Bogoro, Dass and Tafawa-Balewa local government areas of Bauchi State have also dumped the ruling party and decamped to the APC.

In a related development, over 1,000 members of the PDP and other political parties in Ikosi-Ejinrin Local Council Development Area, LCDA, of Lagos State also yesterday decamped to the APC.

Thirty seven members of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the PDP had already defected to the opposition, APC, giving the opposition a slim majority in the lower House.

With this development, the APC now controls the lower House with a majority of 172 members while the PDP has 171. But to change the structure of the House, the APC needs 181 members.

There are 360 members in the House. Should the 29 members move to join the APC in January, the party would have about 200 members of the House, far more than the required number to control the House.

In Bauchi, members of the PDP in Bogoro, Dass and Tafawa- Balewa local government areas, led by the lawmaker representing the federal constituency, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, at a rally, which took place at the famous Watal Hotel in Tafawa-Balewa Local Government Area, the headquarters of the federal constituency, dumped the ruling party for the opposition.

The defection attracted eminent politicians, diplomats, youths and women, including serving political appointees of Isa Yuguda. Speaking at the occasion, Hon. Dogara said that his defection to the APC followed PDP’s perpetual injustice and lack of internal democracy and insensitivity to the plight of the people, adding that the PDP-led government has failed to fulfill its campaign promises to his constituency.

He lambasted the PDP administration for operating as a military junta without regard for the people, noting that the government has failed to curb the lingering security crises in the North-East.

His words: “I cannot continue to stay in the PDP, which has failed to execute any single project in my constituency since the advent of democracy, despite bankrolling President Goodluck Jonathan and Yuguda’s victory in my constituency in 2011 despite my area being a PDP stronghold.”

Also speaking, the leader of the defectors, Michael Kogos, said that their decision to dump the PDP followed the party’s failure to carry the people along; lack of internal democracy as well as the lingering crisis in the party at all levels.

Kogos said that the APC has come to stay in Bogoro, Dass and Tafawa-Balewa local council areas of the state in support of Hon. Dogara, whose giant strides were commendable.

The defected PDP members accused the Yuguda administration of blurred vision and failure to consolidate on the work of his predecessor, Adamu Mua’zu.

It would be recalled that last week, about 15,000 members of the PDP were confirmed to have dumped the party for the opposition APC in the state, a development which the state PDP secretary described as “bad omen for the party.”

But the state Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Alhaji Alin Ardo, said, the defected member of the House of Representatives would soon return to the umbrella.

He debunked claims that the PDP government has not executed any single project in his constituency, thus warranting his defection to the APC, saying that the federal and state governments have been up and doing in the area.

In Lagos, the PDP chairmanship candidate for the Ikosi-Ejirin LCDA in the 2011 local government election, Segun Ogunsanya, led the PDP defectors who were received into the APC by a former Commissioner for Health in the state, Mr. Leke Pitan; former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Joko Pelumi and the APC chairman in the LCDA, Elder Lateef Sangosanya, to the APC. Speaking on the rationale behind their move, Ogunsanya, described the decision to dump the PDP as the best thing to do, following the developmental strides embarked upon by the incumbent chairman, Prince Olusegun Adetola.

The vice chairman of the party in Lagos State, Alhaji Akanni Seriki Bamu, urged the new APC members to ensure that the expected dividends of democracy are enjoyed by the people, assuring that there would be no form of discrimination against the new members of the party, as they would have the same rights as the old members of the party.

It would be recalled that the latest defection is the third time politicians of various parties will be decamping to APC in Ikosi-Ejinrin LCDA

SSS Arrests Pastor Akubuiro and His Children Over Fake Currency Production

The Department of State Security Service, SSS, in Lokoja, Kogi on Tuesday announced the arrest of a syndicate, including a pastor, for the alleged printing and circulation of fake naira notes.

The Director of SSS, Mike Fubara, who presented the suspects to journalists, said the syndicate included 15 others, including the pastor’s six children.

He named the pastor as Godson Akubuiro, the General Overseer of The Mountain of Breakthrough Deliverance Ministry, Lagos.

Mr. Fubara said the SSS in its effort to trace the source of the “worrisome fake naira currency in circulation in the state,” undertook a covert operation to uncover those behind the act.

“This operation took the service close to four months before a breakthrough resulting in the arrest of the 16-man syndicate led by Reverend Godson O. Akubuiro,” the director said.

He said that the operation took security agents to The Breakthrough Church, also known as Land of Solution, located at Agric, Ikorodu, Lagos.

He said that the suspects were being investigated preparatory to their prosecution.

The director said items recovered from the suspects include equipment and materials used in printing fake currencies.

Other items recovered were a large quantity of printed fake notes, cut to size blank currency notes and N1.3 million fake naira notes.

Mr. Fubara urged the public to be wary of the fake naira notes in circulation and report suspects to the service.

Mr. Akubuiro, however, told journalists that he was not using the money for himself but in supporting the less privileged and the needy in his congregation. He pleaded for leniency, saying men of God were often tempted like King David in the bible, who as a man after God’s heart fell many times but was still pardoned by God.

Photos : Pregnant Man gives birth to a baby girl in Argentina

The first baby to be born to transgender parents in Argentina was delivered via C-section in the province of Entre Ríos.

The proud parents are 26-year-old Alexis Taborda and 28-year-old Karen Bruselario.

Alexis was born a woman, but lives as a man and Karen was born a man, but lives as a woman. Because of Argentina's Gender Identity Law passed in May of 2012, the couple have both been able to legally change their genders without gender reassignment surgery, which meant that when they got pregnant via natural means, it was the man, Alexis, who carried the baby.

The baby was due on December 22 via scheduled C-section, but couldn't wait. Alexis started having contractions the weekend before the scheduled birth, and the  baby was born "early" weighing 9.37 pounds at Hospital Fermín Salaberry in Victoriain.

The couple named their baby girl Génesis Evangelina.

Alexis and Karen do not only hold the distinction of being the first transgender couple to give birth in Argentina they are also the first transgender couple to have gotten married while the groom was pregnant.

They officially tied the knot in November.

Kanye West And Kim Kardashian Named Worst Neighbours Of 2013

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have been named as the worst neighbours of 2013 in a new survey.

Theyhad the dubious honour of taking first place in the poll by real estate website Zillow in their Celebrity Neighbour Survey. A quarter of Americans surveyed in the list named West and Kardashian as the least desirable neighbours of the year.

Zillow’s Chief Marketing Officer Amy Bohutinsky said: “No one wants to live next door to a family who has cameras following them everywhere and seems to seek out as much attention as possible. However, with more than one-third of surveyed Americans preferring a non-celebrity neighbor, what remains clear is that many people don’t want to live next to any celebrity, regardless of why they are famous.”

16 per cent of people surveyed claimed that Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber would be the worst neighbours imaginable, with 4 per cent plumping for Lady Gaga instead.

Comedian Jimmy Fallon was chosen as the most desirable neighbour, meanwhile, with 11 per cent of the vote.

Photo : Pastor And His 6 Children Abducted By Gunmen In Lagos

A 27-man gang on Friday abducted a pastor, Mr. Godson Akubiro, and six of his children from their Adeosun Street residence, Koya Estate, Igbo Olomu, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Akubiro is said to be the founder of Mountain of Breakthrough Church in the area. The incident was said to have occurred about 1.30am.

Neighbours, who requested anonymity, told PUNCH Metro that the gunmen arrived at Akubiro residence in three jeeps and a Toyota Tundra vehicle. The number plates of the vehicles were said to have been covered.

The gunmen, who wore army camouflage, had allegedly gained entrance into the house with the aid of an iron cutter.

It was learnt that since the abduction, no one had heard from Akubiro and his six children.

The Community Developmen Association Chairman, Mr. Yinka Obasan, said he was alerted about the development about 2am.

“I got a call that night from a resident who was coming from a vigil. He told me that he noticed some military vehicles parked outside Akubiro’s home. He said the vehicles belonged to a high ranking military official because the insignia was covered.

“I told the man to wait for me and together we went to Akubiro’s home. When we got there, I greeted the men I met outside and introduced myself as the CDA chairman. I asked them if there was a problem. Instead of answering me, they turned on my companion and accused him of alerting me.

“After berating both of us for not minding our business, they forced us to sit on the ground and seized our phones. There was another resident sitting on the ground; they had detained him since 12am when they arrived. Then they started beating us.”

It was learnt that inside the Akubiro residence six of Akubiro’s children were in the sitting room watching a movie, when the men, said to be dressed in dark googles, black jeans and heavy bullet proof vests entered.

It was gathered that they told the terrified children that they were policemen and proceeded to drag their father, who was sleeping, from his bedroom into the sitting room. The six children, whose ages ranged between 30 and eight years, were beaten up.

One of them, an eight-year-old named Emeka, was allegedly tied to a tree in the compound. No reason was allegedly given by the gunmen for their actions.

Another 18-year-old boy named Obiora was said to have been tortured with a taser. Akubiro’s wife, Rita, was said to be away on a trip to South Africa at the time.

It was learnt that the gunmen later took Akubiro away along with Ada, his first daughter, Obiora, Oyinyenchi, Felicia,, Nonso and Kingsley. Three person were allegedly left behind – Emeka, Chidera and a baby.

Obasan said, “Around 2.45am, those who were inside came out with Akubiro and his children. They said they were going to the man’s church to burn it down – Akubiro is the founder and head of the Mountain of Breakthrough Church on Breakthrough Street in this estate.

“They put their victims in their vehicles and zoomed off. Before leaving, they threw our phones at us.”

It was gathered that immediately the gunmen left, a report was lodged at the Owutu Police Division.

However, the DPO was said to have denied that the gunmen were policemen.

It was learnt that since the incident, no one had been able to establish contact with Akubiro and his children. His wife Rita, who returned from South Africa the following day, was said to have received no calls concerning their whereabouts.

Samsung to make first ever smartphone chip with 4GB of RAM

Samsung Electronics has announced that it has developed the first 8Gb low-power double data rate 4 (LPDDR4) mobile DRAM. This chip can transmit 3.2Gbps over each of their electric connection, which is twice that of today’s DDR3 and also consumes 40 percent less power.

The 8Gb LPDDR4 offers 1GB (gigabyte) on a single die, which is the largest density available for DRAM components today.

“This next-generation LPDDR4 DRAM will contribute significantly to faster growth of the global mobile DRAM market, which will soon comprise the largest share of the entire DRAM market,” revealed Young-Hyun Jun, executive vice president, memory sales and marketing, Samsung Electronics.

“We will continue in introducing the most advanced mobile DRAM one step ahead of the rest of the industry so that global OEMs can launch innovative mobile devices with exceptional user convenience in the timeliest manner.”

Previously, smartphones with RAM of 2GB (gigabytes) and 3GB have employed 4Gb (gigabits) and 6Gb DDR3 memory chips. The implication of the new development by Samsung is that 8Gb LPDDR4 will allow smartphones to have 4GB of RAM.

The 8Gb LPDDR4 mobile DRAM in a nutshell will allow users to have faster, more responsive applications, more advanced features, and higher resolution displays while maximizing battery life.

It is expected that Samsung will reveal its own Exynos 64-bits processor very soon. Combined with this new innovation, it is being anticipated that the coming Samsung Galaxy S5 could be the most powerful smartphone when it comes into the market, a position Apple’s iPhone5S currently occupies.
