Lionel Messi Accused Of ‘Bullying And Insulting’ Team-mates To Point Of Tears

Lionel Messi has had his conduct questioned after quotes published by Spanish site El Confidencial suggested that the Argentine insults and bullies his team-mates.

Widely regarded as the world’s best footballer, Messi has been accused in the past of not being the ideal team man, and the latest quotes - if accurate - could indicate that the Argentine struggles to control his anger towards other players at the club.

The story - headlined "the true face of Messi" - was allegedly filtered out via Spain U19 stars Alejandro Grimaldo and Gerard Deulofeu, and claims that the unrest in the Barcelona dressing room has been kept firmly under wraps previously due to a Mafia-style 'omerta' – a law of silence.

Messi's "favourite victim at the moment" is said to be Spanish 22-year-old Cristian Tello, to whom Messi has apparently delivered such gems as "What are you doing? You're new here, and you're nobody!" and "Pass me the ball, you're here to play for me."

Tello was allegedly left in tears after these exchanges, a situation which the report claims was made even worse by the fact that the other players in the changing room blanked him even when he broke into the first team.

Tello and Messi celebrate together - but is there bad blood between them?

Messi is also reported to have attacked Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez, who signed from Udinese for 37 million euros in 2011, saying, "Considering how bad you are, I've no idea how you cost so much," and, "Stop shooting so much and give me the ball."

The story remains firmly in the ‘unconfirmed’ bracket, and even if Messi did use the language in question it's certainly easy enough to imagine that he did so with tongue firmly in cheek, in the spirit of training ground banter.

But Eurosport Spain’s journalist Jorge Ordas says it’s not unusual for such reports to emerge regarding Messi's standing within the squad.

"Well, it’s not the first time that it has been said Messi that is not a good team-mate," Ordas said.

"He had some troubles with David Villa last year and he probably has a special personality.

Lagos Cable Car Network. Construction Starts In November

Lagos in Nigeria has become the latest city to propose a cable car as a mode of mass urban transport in a scheme to be completed by 2015.

Ropeways Transport Limited has signed a franchise agreement with the (LAMATA) Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority and the Lagos State government, which will cover the project for 30 years.

Construction on the first phase of the cable car system will begin in November when towers, stations and the connecting cables will start to be put in place.

Once completed, passengers will be able to travel from Ijora to Iddo; Iddo to Adeniji; Apapa to Oluwole; Oluwole to Adeniji; Adeniji to Obalende; Obalende to Falomo; and Falomo to Victoria Island.

Captain Dago Olumide, Chief Executive Officer of Ropeways Transport Limited, said that the cable car network would help to solve the transport issues that are currently hampering Lagos and preventing its economic expansion.

He went on to say: "By complementing existing transport modes, the Lagos cable car transit system will play its part in reducing the traffic congestion in the city."

Lagos is expected to have 25 million inhabitants by the year 2015, meaning that the current 12 million daily passenger movements will increase by six per cent each year, putting added pressure on the existing transport infrastructure.

It can take those travelling to work by car within the city as long as three hours to complete the journey and 200,000 new vehicles are registered in Lagos State every year, Captain Olumide pointed out.

"Presently, there is need to ameliorate the existing congestion on the three bridges connecting Lagos Mainland to Lagos Island and to provide a link between Apapa and the Central Business District on Lagos Island, and also to link Victoria Island with the Central Business District of Lagos Island. These are what we hope to achieve with the launch of the cable transit system," he added.

Cable cars are increasingly being used as an everyday form of transport across the world, due to the fact that they are green and efficient, with one currently under construction in Brest in Brittany.

French to be part of UTME from 2014 – Minister of Education

Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’I, said on Thursday in Abuja that French language would be part of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination as from 2014 for interested candidates, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Rufa’I said this at  a reception held in honour of the French Language Project Manager, Mr. Jean-Phillipe Roy.

She said that being multi-lingual in the 21st Century was essential as it helps individuals to operate more effectively in the international community.

“For Nigeria, the study of French language is quite key, considering the fact that our neighbouring countries are French-speaking. Apart from the English language, French language is one of the major international languages,” she said.

She said Roy came to Nigeria in 2009 under the second Bilateral Agreement between Nigeria and French.

The minister noted that the French had worked hard to ensure that various components of the project received due attention.

Rufa’i lauded his contributions to the reform of the UTME for 2014 in addition to the scholarships awarded to 16 teachers of French language to study in France for one month.

She said the project manager’s contributions included supply of books to schools, award of Master’s degree in French as a foreign language and supply of DVD and CD player to the project office.

The minister lauded the support of the French Government to the Nigerian French Language Village, Badagry, Lagos; and the Regional Network of French Language centres in Africa.

She also commended the Association of French Language Teachers, and noted  the proposed handing over of the project vehicle to the ministry for the monitoring of the teaching and learning of the language.

“Nigeria and France have come a long way in their relationship. It is a relationship built on mutual respect, cooperation and interest. I wish to assure you that the ministry will continue to be committed to the teaching and learning of French Language in Nigeria and sustenance of the cordial relationship,’’ she said.

Roy praised the collaboration between the Federal Government and the French Government.

“Since I have been here, you have shown a lot of interest in what we have been trying to do in terms of decision-making in critical issues and, with your help, we have been able to keep the project on the right track,” he said.

Finally : Sunday Mba joins French club Bastia for €1.32m

Nigerian international midfielder Sunday Mba has sealed a one-year deal with French Ligeue 1 side CA Bastia on Thursday for €1.32m, The Punch has announced.

The 24-year-old who was earlier estimated for €1m saw his bid raised after he passed his medical with the Corsicans early this week.

With this contract, the former Worry Wolves star is henceforth ineligible for Nigeria’s maiden appearance at African Nations Championship (CHAN). The 2013 AFCON hero was decisive in helping Nigeria qualifier for the CHAN against Côte D’Ivoire.

Heach Coach Stephen Keshi shall now miss the captain of the home-based Eagles after losing Godfrey Oboabona who signed a four-years contract with Turkish top flight side Rizespor last week.

The “Big Boss” has always expressed his wish to see the “home boys” pickup good clubs abroad but he also said that he would have love to march on to South Africa with the team that brilliantly qualifier Nigeria for the Tournament reserved for players playing in their local leagues.

I Didn't Have S*x With Femi Fani-Kayode -- Bianca Ojukwu

Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s widow and Nigeria’s ambassador to Spain, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, has described as false the claim by former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, that she was his girlfriend when she was a spinster.

Fani-Kayode had in his article, entitled: “Neither a tribalist nor a hater,” published in the social media and some segments of the national dailies (not The Sun), claimed to have met with Bianca when she was Miss Bianca Onoh at the Cambridge College and had “intimate” relationship with her together with two other Igbo ladies.

Reacting to this, Bianca said  she had never met Fani-Kayode before, either at official or private level, not to talk of having an “intimate” relationship with him.

The ambassador, who spoke through her lawyers, Wall Street Attorneys, has, therefore, threatened to drag the former aide to ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo to court if, in the next seven days, he fails to retract his libelous publication against her.

In the letter from her lawyers to Fani-Kayode, dated August 27, 2013 and signed by Mike Ugwuanyi, Esq, Mrs. Ojukwu demanded that the former minister writes an apology and retraction of the said libelous publication in The Sun and Thisday newspapers, as well as publish it in the online publication, where it emanated, in the next seven days or face litigation.

The letter written by Mrs. Ojukwu’s lawyers and obtained by The Sun read in part: “We have been briefed and our services retained by Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain to demand from you an unreserved apology and a retraction of a false and malicious statement, which you published online and also caused to be published in the Leadership Newspaper of August 16, 2013.

“In the said article entitled, ‘Neither a Tribalist nor a Hater,’ you recklessly alleged, as follows: ‘I was not a tribalist when I had a long standing and intimate relationship with Miss Bianca Onoh…’, a statement, which you know is untrue and unfounded, but only calculated to lower our client’s esteem and damage her national and international reputation.

“Our client has never met you, does not know you in person and has never had any official or private relationship with you how much more ‘a long-standing and intimate relationship.’

“Our client is therefore, outraged by your bizarre and scandalous allegation and the numerous mails and telephone calls she has received from friends, relations and admirers who are equally embarrassed and who seek to confirm the veracity or otherwise of your false and reckless publication.

“Your apparent lame and half-hearted attempt, as published in the Leadership Newspaper of 17th August 2013, to clarify your false and malicious allegation falls far short of a retraction and does not sufficiently address the damage to our client arising from the widespread dissemination of your false publication and is therefore unacceptable to our client.

“In the circumstances, we demand, on the instruction of our client that you submit to her a clear and unqualified apology and retraction published in The Sun and Thisday newspapers in addition to having the retraction published online.

“Take note that should you fail to tender the apology and publish a retraction of your false and malicious publication, seven days next after your receipt of this demand notice, our further instructions are to seek appropriate redress in court. And that shall be without further recourse to you. Be properly guided.”

Sean Kingston Facing $5million Gang R*pe Lawsuit

Singer Sean Kingston is being reportedly sued by a fan who alleges that she was r*ped by the star in 2010.

Carissa Capeloto - now 22 - claims she was forced to have se*x with the Beautiful Girls hitmaker, his bodyguard and a member of his band at a Seattle hotel after she was invited to Kingston's hotel room for a meet-and-greet.

In court documents obtained by celebrity site TMZ, Capeloto states that when she arrived at the hotel, Kingston was waiting for her n*ked on his bed.

She claims that the three men were aware that she had smoked pot and downed 7-10 shots but preceded to gang r*pe her while she was "obviously intoxicated, incapable of consent."

According to the lawsuit, the assault only stopped when her friend entered the room and rescued her. The police were called and Capeloto was taken to the hospital where she says she was treated for physical injuries consistent with rape.

Capeloto says her life has been ruined by the alleged attack and she now suffers from sleepless nights, mood swings and panic attacks as a result.

She is reportedly seeking $5million in damages.

In 2010, criminal charges were dropped without action after investigators concluded that Capeloto was not credible enough to pursue the matter.

Kingston, born Kisean Anderson, has always denied the r*pe allegations and filed legal documents insisting the s*x was 100% consensual.

The trial is scheduled for November.

Photo : Customs officer lynched to death by angry mob in Lagos [viewer discretion is advised]

There was mayhem at the Seme border area of Lagos State on Thursday after a 35-year-old man, Saturday Joel, was shot by officials of the Nigerian Customs Service.

Eyewitnesses said Joel was hit by a stray bullet while some customs officers were trying to apprehend a motorist who was smuggling a red Volkswagen bus from Benin Republic into Nigeria.

It was learnt that after the shooting, some residents took to the streets in protest. The residents were said to have alleged that customs officials had killed at least three motorists this month under the pretext that they were smugglers.

It was learnt that in the ensuing pandemonium, the customs officials stationed in the area fled.

However, a Superintendent of Customs, identified as J. I Motojelu, was said to have been driving by at the time.

PUNCH Metro learnt that in retaliation, the angry mob, led by a community leader, dragged the officer out of his Toyota Corolla car marked ABJ 663 DW, and killed him.

It was learnt that the irate mob, also set the deceased officer’s vehicle ablaze and set up bonfires at the centre of the road. The culprits were said to have used the opportunity to steal some items that had previously been seized by customs.

A police source said, “Motojelu, who knew nothing about the incident was beaten to death. The mob opened a customs patrol van stationed nearby and took a G3 rifle with 30 rounds of ammunition kept inside it. They then set the vehicle ablaze.”

Lagos Ranked 4th Worst City In The World

According to Economist Intelligence Unit, EIU, an independent forecasting and advisory business within the Economist Group, Lagos is the fourth worst city in the world.

And its top worst cities, are scattered around Africa and Asia.

Lagos, the fourth on the list, shares its 137 position with Port Moresby, in Papua New Guinea on 38.9 percent.

The report made available yesterday described Lagos as the second-fastest growing city in Africa and the fourth worst city on earth.

“Rapid growth is not always a good thing because Lagos is now a magnet for two perpetual threats to peace: pirates and Islamist warriors.Boko Haram have a problem with cities like Lagos and also lots of weaponry. Pirates threaten trade and use kidnapping as a method of funding. Islamist terrorist groups such as Boko Haram (“Education is forbidden”) want to create their own version of heaven on earth by destroying cities such as Lagos and imposing strict sharia law. Lagos has enormous potential but as yet little to show for it – hence its poor ranking,” the report said.

EIU in its 2013 annual survey of the world’s 140 major metropolises, said Lagos has a long way to go politically, socially and economically before it joins the emerging market club.

Kris Jenner's talk show has not been canceled

Kris Jenner's talk show has not been canceled, Fox reps say.

Rumors of Kris Jenner's talk show's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

On Wednesday, Radar Online reported that the mother-of-six's show had been axed from the network thanks to "abysmal" ratings.

"It is a very crowded market and Kris didn't do anything to set herself apart from the field," a source told the gossip site. "Believe it or not, most of America doesn't want to hear about the Kardashians for an hour every day."

But Fox reps slammed the report, confirming that Jenner had not been booted from the network.

'The Kris Jenner Show' began its six-week trial run earlier this summer.

"Rumors are false," a spokesperson told the Daily News.

Jenner, the 57-year-old matriarch of the Kardashian family, has drawn attention to her show through hosting members of her extended reality star family.

Last week, she unveiled the first publicly seen photo of new granddaughter North West, in what was widely seen as an attempt to boost ratings. But the "momager" seems to be holding strong, as speculation swirled over whether her show would be picked up past the six-week trial period.

"Rumors flying are false but glad everyone is still buzzing about our 6 week summer run!!!!" Jenner wrote on Twitter.

Students give FG, ASUU 7-day ultimatum to end strike or face serious consequences

Peeved by almost two-month old strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), yesterday issued a one-week ultimatum to the Federal Government and the union’s leadership to resolve their differences or face serious consequences.

The students said if the impasse was not resolved within the next seven days, it will mobilise students on a nation-wide riot in what it described as ‘operation occupy Nigeria’.

The students’ body  appealed to ASUU to return to the classroom and continue negotiation with the Federal Government since the latter claimed to have released over N100 billion for infrastructural development and another N30 billion for allowances.

This was the highpoint of a protest by the students who blocked the Asaba end of the River Niger Bridge to press home their demands. The protest caused traffic snarl for several hours as the students stalled movements to the eastern part of the country even as those returning were barred.

NANS coordinator in the South-South and South-East, Comrade Chinonso Obasi, stated that students were at the receiving end of the strike and vowed that they would take their destinies in their own hands if the parties failed to reconcile within a week.

“We are appealing to ASUU that since  the Federal Government has been able to release N100 billion for infrastructural development and N30 billion for allowance, they should go back to classroom and continue their negotiation or agitation. This is our prayer and wish.

“We are giving them one week to open the schools or be ready to face corrosive consequences in form of nation-wide demonstration and riots. We are ready to mobilise for that and it will be operation occupy Nigeria,” he said.

Lamenting the effect of the strike,  Obasi said students have become prone to accidents on the  highways and the female students have been reduced to sex hawkers on the streets.

His words: “I stand to tell you that a lot of accidents have been recorded and 99.9% of the victims are Nigerian students. If they were in classrooms, they would not have fallen victims of road crashes.

“Our female students have become commercial s*x hawkers on the streets in order to make ends meet. This colossal effect is more than what ASUU is agitating for. Hence, we can no longer fold our arms and watch things go wrong.”

Ex-girlfriend of North Korean leader shot by Firing Squad After Making S*x Tape

Kim Jong-un's Ex-Girlfriend 'Shot by Firing Squad'

Kim Jong-un's ex-girlfriend was among a dozen well-known North Korean performers who were executed by firing squad on Aug. 20, reports said Wednesday.

Sources in China said singer Hyon Song-wol as well as Mun Kyong-jin, head of the Unhasu Orchestra, were arrested on Aug. 17 for violating North Korean laws against pornography and were executed in public three days later.

The victims of the atrocity were members of the Unhasu Orchestra as well as singers, musicians and dancers with the Wangjaesan Light Music Band.

They were accused of videotaping themselves having s*x and selling the videos. The tapes have apparently gone on sale in China as well.

A source said some allegedly had Bibles in their possession, and all were treated as political dissidents.

Kim met Hyon about a decade ago, before either of them was married. But he was later ordered to break off the relationship by his father Kim Jong-il and she married a soldier. Since then there have been rumors that the two were having an affair.

Kim's wife Ri Sol-ju was also a member of the Unhasu Orchestra before she married him. Whether she had any hand in the executions is unclear. The Unhasu Orchestra and Wangjaesan Light Music Band have apparently been disbanded due to the latest scandal.

"They were executed with machine guns while the key members of the Unhasu Orchestra, Wangjaesan Light Band and Moranbong Band as well as the families of the victims looked on," the source said.

The source added that all of the families of the executed appear to have been sent to prison camps under North Korea's barbaric principle of guilt by association.

Hyon was a singer with the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble, which is famous for revolutionary and propaganda songs and one of North Korea's most popular bands.

Mun won first place in an international competition in Hungary in 2005 and was decorated by the North Korean state.

Kim Jong-un was last year seen at a performance that featured Disney characters and versions of Western songs, stoking hopes that the young leader is more open to ideas from overseas, but that was apparently a misreading.

A source said, "Kim Jong-un has been viciously eliminating anyone who he deems a challenge to his authority." The executions "show that he is fixated on consolidating his leadership."

Photos : Chelsea complete Samuel Eto'o signing

Eto'o, 32, joins the Blues on a one-year deal after spending two seasons at the Dagestan-based club.\\

"I am very happy to be here but also anxious because I want to get playing as soon as possible," the Cameroon striker said.

"'It wasn't a hard decision. I saw the qualities Chelsea have, and I was very happy with Jose Mourinho before, so when the opportunity came, I was very happy to take it."

The signing of the Cameroon international, who won the Champions League with Mourinho while at Inter Milan, would appear to end Chelsea's interest in Wayne Rooney, who the West London club have been courting all summer.

Eto'o, who has also played for Barcelona, Real Madrid and Mallorca, surprisingly joined big-spending Anzhi in 2011 on a reported world record wage.

But he has fallen victim to the club's cost-cutting measures, which also saw Brazil playmaker Willian move to Stamford Bridge this week.

Shocking Photo : Meet The Woman Who Says A Reptile Lives In Her

Maria Tsotetsi (49), from extension 28 in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, SA, says she has an evil snake inside her stomach.

She said she has been told by several prophets and traditional healers that the reptile lives inside her.
Maria, who looks pregnant, said she was in hospital in 2011, where the doctors told her she had a growth."They told me I had lost blood and they wanted to operate on me but nothing happened after that. The nurses put me on drips but a few days later, they released me."

She said that her ex-boyfriend took her to a bishop after she complained about a pain in her stomach. The bishop told her to strip off her clothes and gave her muthi (herbs) to steam. "The muthi was covered in a white and brown snake skin. The bishop said it would cure me," she said. But a few days later, she realised there was something in her body and her teeth started falling out.

"I believe the muthi made me lose my teeth. My boyfriend then dumped me after 14 years and I've been single ever since," she said. "I want him to come and remove the snake he put in my stomach. I believe he's responsible for this." She said she sometimes has her period for two weeks and it's so heavy she has to use nappies.

Traditional healer Ntsimbi Ngema said: "This kind of thing is done by jealous lovers. There's no way Maria could have a new boyfriend because he could die after having sex with her."

A doctor who didn't want to be named said Maria could be suffering from all sorts of things, including kidney stones or gall stones.

Actress Lola Alao's New Husband Is A Fraudster ;Convicted In Kuwait for Credit Card Scam

According to E247mag

A fortnight ago when star actress, Lola Alao, got married in far- flung Atlanta, United States of America, USA, to Adewale Yakubu Adewale Ajibola, the couple, literally, could not contain their excitement.

Lola was positively glowing in her creamy wedding dress while Yakubu sporting a bespoke grey suit, wore a disarming smile.

Though not an opulent wedding, they exchanged marital vows, flaunted the marriage certificate and
the pictures  that went viral online generated mixed reactions.

There are fears too, solemn fears: Lola's new hubby is plagued with an ugly past - a credit card scam that kept him 'inside' in a Kuwaiti cell.

According to an insider, this isn't the first time the 'Nigerian big boy' has been on the wrong side of the law.

His claim to relevance and easy bait for unsuspecting women who wanted love and affection, has been his American citizenship’s status and his dashing looks, a reference to what in Yoruba parlance is called Faworaja, (meaning a person who lives off his looks).

When he was arrested in Kuwait for the credit card scam, Yakubu, was able to answer the police questions adroitly, but the authorities were not convinced of his claim that he was innocent.

A ring of 'scammers' had some months before his arrival, operated in the same manner and went away with their loot in the Middle East commercial city.

Unsuspectingly, Yakubu walked into a booby trap.

While Wale Yakubu Ajibola, the Nigerian-born American citizen served terms for one year,  the Big Sam turned the other cheek.

Lola, who is hell-bent on getting a husband, was not too lucky last year when her hatched plot to marry another Nigerian based in Europe was thwarted by her first husband, Dare Ogunlana,  who unleashed a media attack on her.  Meanwhile, Lola found a close ally in another actress, Bukky Wright, also married to a US-based Nigerian, Wale Onitilo.

Lola and Bukky seem to be best friends in real life because their chemistry comes through effortlessly.

Since her marriage to US-based lover and car dealer, Dare Ogunlana, broke up, the Kogi-born actress has met a few men but she has not been quite lucky to have one of them put a ring on it.

Bukky, we reliably gathered has been concerned and busy setting Lola up on dates with non-famous friends and some buddies of her current hubby. She wanted Lola to have her kind of relationship that will guarantee American citizenship status.

When Yakubu walked in, it was a willing and desperate Lola he met and, trust her, she quickly hung on tight. Sources disclosed that while he was cooling his feet in the Kuwaiti authorities' cell, Lola scampered for his release by consulting marabouts widely.

They were constantly in touch on phone and gradually they  built the affection.

On release some months ago, after serving terms in Kuwait for one year, she sent him a ticket to come home, made few appearances at functions that were private  and  they bonded before he returned to the United States  to prepare for the August wedding.

While Lola has taken the highroad by walking down the aisle with Yakubu,  brimming with broad smiles that  she has found love and a good match, observers of Nollywood  marriages and the rate at which it dissolves, feel Lola may have finally found a big catch to perfect her plans for an American citizenship status.

Yakubu, E24-7 MAGAZINE'S checks revealed, has never been married but he has three kids, including a set of twins  from two women among his strings of ladies.

From his profile, though he claimed to be an ICT expert, he is not quite buoyant financially and his recent incarceration in Kuwait has not helped.

There is no record of an apartment in his name; the newly married couple are guests in one of the hubby's relations' house in Atlanta.

Prior to his ill-fated venture in Kuwait, he is said to have been living off his relations in California before life threw terrible storms at him and he moved to Houston.

In his bid to survive, he crossed to Atlanta where he allegedly joined the credit scam racket popularly known as 'Track 1, Track 2'.

For Lola, it has been a tortuous and lonely journey with her 10-year- old daughter, Omowunmi from her first marriage with Dare.

As she stepped out from the depths of despair to happily ever after, it is not clear if Dare will not sue her for bigamy as their marriage consummated in Nigeria has not been officially dissolved.

Lola and Yakubu are expected in Nigeria soon.

Samuel Eto'o arrives in London to complete move to Chelsea

Brazil midfielder Willian completed his move to Chelsea as speculation intensified he could be joined at Stamford Bridge by his former team-mate Samuel Eto'o.

The twice-capped 25-year-old was finally granted a work permit on Wednesday to complete his move from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala after agreeing a five-year contract with the Blues.

And with their attempts to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United seemingly floundering, Chelsea were reported to be on the verge of signing another Anzhi player in the form of Cameroon striker Eto'o.

On Thursday morning pictures emerged of the 32-year-old, who has been widely linked with a move to Stamford Bridge over the last few days, apparently arriving at London St Pancras station on Wednesday night.

Chelsea are keen to increase their attacking options, while Anzhi have been offloading players after owner Suleyman Kerimov decided to reduce his spending at the Dagestan club.

Former Barcelona star Eto'o flourished under Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho's guidance when the pair were at Inter Milan together.

“The Biggest Film Star You’ve Never Heard Of”;Read Omotola Jalade's Interview for UK Stella Magazine

The full interview for Nollywood Diva Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde‘s The Sunday Telegraph‘s Stella Magazine is now online.

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, aka ‘Omosexy’, is the queen of Nollywood. She’s appeared in more than 300 films, pulls in 150 million viewers for her reality-television show and has been named one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

She scores a zero on the Hollywood Richter scale. She has never starred in a major motion picture. Her most recent film, Last Flight to Abuja, means nothing to devotees of Netflix and LoveFilm.

When she sat next to Steven Spielberg at a Time magazine dinner earlier this year he didn’t know her name. Yet Omotola Jalade Ekeinde was attending that dinner because, like him, she had been honoured in Time’s 2013 list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.

Alongside Kate Middleton, Michelle Obama and Beyoncé. The star of more than 300 films, Omotola – or “Omosexy”, as she is known to her legions of fans – is bigger across the African diaspora than Halle Berry.

Her reality-television show, Omotola: The Real Me, pulls in more viewers than Oprah’s and Tyra’s at their peak, combined, and she is the first African celebrity ever to amass more than one million Facebook “likes”.

When I meet her for the interview in a photographic studio in south-east London she is still recovering from getting mobbed by her Afro-Caribbean fan base in a nearby Tesco. “They practically had to shut down the store when people recognised me,” she says. “I actually got scared.”

Omotola is one of the biggest stars in Nollywood, the low-budget, high-output Nigerian film industry that churns out more English-language films than Hollywood or Bollywood (1,000-2,000 a year). Some have cinematic releases, but most are for the straight-to-video market.

When I watch her Stella photo-shoot from the sidelines it is immediately apparent that everything about her is BIG. Big body, big hair, big personality, big laugh: she comes across like Oprah’s sister.

She is here with her own film crew, who are recording for a future episode of her television show.

Which means there is also a big, superstar delay – three hours – before our interview can start.

Many of her fans think her real name is “Omosexy”, she tells me, laughing, when we finally get to speak, but it was a nickname given to her by her husband, an airline pilot.

“He bought me a car back in 2009, and that was the plate number,” she recalls, speaking with kinetic, girlish excitement, rattling off sentences in fast, extended flurries.

“All my cars have special plate numbers, like Omotola 1.” When I ask how many cars she has, she laughs again, with embarrassment. “A few.” When she first saw her personalised licence plate she was horrified. “I thought, ‘Oh no!’ It sounded cocky.

As if I was telling everybody, ‘I’m sexy!’ Y’know-wha-I-mean?” She punctuates her sentences with this phrase, which she reels off as a single word.

The 35-year-old star has been acting since she was 16. Most recently she starred as Suzie, a passenger freshly spurned by her adulterous lover, in an aeroplane disaster movie, Last Flight to Abuja, which was the highest grossing film at the African box office last year.

Her breakthrough role came in 1995, in the Nollywood classic Mortal Inheritance, in which she played a sickle-cell patient fighting for her life. Since then she has established a staggering average of 16 films a year.

I put it to her that she must be the most prolific actress in the world. She laughs and shakes her head. “I am sure there are people who have beaten that record in Nigeria. Trust me.

It is easy to turn around with straight-to-video movies. It is the fashion to shoot until you drop, night and day. You have to remember that we are on very low budgets, so there is no time to wait.”

Nollywood began fewer than 20 years ago on the bustling streets of Lagos. Its pioneers were traders and bootleggers who started out selling copies of Hollywood films before graduating into producing their own titles as an inexpensive way to procure more content for a burgeoning market.

The traders finance the films (the average budget is £15,000-£30,000), then sell copies in bulk to local operators, who distribute them in markets, shops and street-corners for as little as £2 each.

The financial equation is problematic, with endemic piracy, issues over copyright and a lack of legally binding contracts.

Even so, what started as a ramshackle business is today worth an estimated £320 million a year, and rising. All this in a country that still lacks a reliable electricity supply.

What is the secret of Omotola’s appeal? “I don’t know,” she says, shrugging. “I wish someone would tell me! People can relate to me, I suppose. They feel as if they know me. A lot of my audience has grown up with me.”

At the same time, in a country that is heavily defined by religion and tradition, it helps that she is seen as a stable role model – a God-fearing woman who has been married to the same man for 17 years, and balances her work-life with bringing up four children.

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde was born into a middle-class family of strict Methodists in Lagos. Her father was the manager of the Lagos Country Club, while her mother worked for a local supermarket chain.

She has two younger brothers and was a tomboy, fiercely independent. “I used to scare boys from a very young age. They found me too much, because I knew what I wanted and I’d boss them around. In those days my mother would joke that I would never find a husband.”

As a child she was closest to her father. “He was a different kind of African man,” she recalls.

“He was very enlightened. He always asked me what I wanted, and encouraged me to speak up. He treated me like a boy.” He died in a car accident when Omotola was 12, while she was away at boarding-school.

“I didn’t grieve,” she says. “When I got home people were telling me that my mother had been crying for days, and that, as the eldest, I had to be strong for her and my brothers. I didn’t know what to do, so I just bottled everything up.

It affected me for many years afterwards. I was always very angry.”

Omotola would later play out her repressed grief on camera, using it as an emotional trigger to make herself cry whenever scripts called for it. But this soon created other problems.

“The director would shout, ‘Cut!’ and I’d still be crying,” she recalls. “I could bring the tears, but I could not control them. In the end I had to stop using that technique.”

At the age of 16 Omotola met her future husband, Matthew Ekeinde, then 26, in church. He was so keen on her that the day after their first meeting he showed up at her house unannounced.

“He soon became a friend of the family. He was almost like a father figure,” she says. “He’d drop my brothers at school and stuff.”

Ekeinde proposed when Omotola was 18. Initially, Omotola’s mother thought her daughter too young to marry, and asked Matthew to wait, but he refused. “She was really shocked,” says Omotola.

“She said, ‘If you want something badly enough you wait for it,’ but he said, ‘If I want something I take it.’ He was very, very bold. It was one of the things I found fascinating about him.”

They had two wedding ceremonies, the second of which took place on a flight from Lagos to Benin. “He’s amazing. If I weren’t married to him I couldn’t see myself with anybody else. I’m a handful.”

Ekeinde has become a reluctant poster boy for a new kind of African man.

“A lot of men come up to him and say, ‘You’re a real man – I can’t believe how you deal with it all.’ He also gets a lot of invitations from various bodies to speak about how he copes as a modern Nigerian man in a relationship with a powerful working woman.”

Omotola’s ascent to the Nollywood elite began the same year she met Ekeinde. She was modelling at the time. One afternoon she tagged along with a model friend who was attending a film audition.

“She didn’t get the part, and she came out and was very sad,” says Omotola. “Then she said, ‘Why don’t you go in and have a go?’

I said ‘OK,’ and went in and got the part. My friend wasn’t happy. That was the end of our friendship.”

Omotola has somehow also found the time to release three albums. And then there is her charitable work. “First and foremost I actually consider myself a humanitarian,” she says proudly.

She started in 2005, working with the United Nations as a World Food Programme ambassador. She now has her own foundation, the Omotola Youth Empowerment Programme.

“I have a lot of young people writing to me, feeling disillusioned. There’s so much injustice in Africa, and people’s lives being trampled on. The foundation was designed to give voice to these people.”

Her own voice has been greatly enhanced by the success of her reality-television show. It is the first show of its kind in Africa, watched by 150 million people across the continent. “

A lot of women say to me that I am their role model and example. They say, ‘If Omotola can do it, I can do it.’ I also get a lot of fan letters from men that say, ‘You are the reason I allow my wife to work, or pursue a career,’ because they see that I am married and that I am doing both.”

Omotola is now one of the most powerful people in what’s being called the “new Nollywood”, a fresh chapter for the industry, characterised by better scripts, improved production values and cinema rather than DVD-only releases.

But there are obstacles for the new Nollywood, not least the fact that Nigeria only has seven major cinemas, and that ticket prices are way beyond the reach of most citizens.

Nollywood’s biggest problem by far, however, is that its films – including Omotola’s – are still not very good. Theirs is a fuzzy, low-budget aesthetic in which histrionic acting combines with often ludicrous plot lines.

The films drown in melodrama, and many scenes are unintentionally comic. Production values and the rigours of plot and character development are dispensed with in the mad rush to complete and distribute.

It’s akin to half-cooking food to feed impatient mouths, and the results feel like first drafts.

Nevertheless, African audiences don’t seem to care, as long as the films are cheap enough for a downtrodden public desperate for escapism, and they feature their own home-grown stars on screen.

So, what does the future hold for Omotola?

She recently made her American debut, in a television drama, Hit the Floor, opposite the R&B star Akon. Does she see her future as Nollywood or Hollywood?

“I’ll just go with the flow. We [in Nollywood] want to collaborate, we don’t want to leave. We are hoping to be the first film industry that will pull Hollywood in, instead of them pulling us out.”

This may not be such a crazy idea, as Hollywood sees the amounts invested in Nollywood, plus a potential audience of over one billion Africans (155 million in Nigeria alone).

Would she like to work with Spielberg? “Oh, please, let it be!” she says, clasping her hands together hopefully.

“Please! Everything happens for a reason.” I ask her if she took Spielberg’s number at that Time dinner. “Hello? I wouldn’t be African if I didn’t, now would I?”
