I6 Local Govt Chairmen, 194 Councillors defect to APC in Kwara

16 Local Govt Chairmen and 194 Councillors  have defected to the ruling opposition party, the All Progressive Congress, APC. The defectees were elected on the platform of PDP.

Announcing their defection today, the Chairman, ALGON, Kwara State chapter (under whose aegis they announced their defection) Mr. Abdulateef Okandeji said failure of the national leaders of the PDP to listen to their grievances is the main reason for their defection.

"I recall that following the refusal and failure of the national leaders of the PDP to address the observations and complaints of its founding members especially about the lawlessness, impunity and injustice which had become the norm and which led to the factionalisation of the PDP, our leaders decided to team up in what is known as the newPDP under the national Chairmanship of our own Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje.

After exhaustive consultations and deliberations by our leaders spearheaded by Senator Bukola Saraki, it was unanimously decided that the best option for us would be to merge with the newly formed APC and work together in the overall interest of the good people of this country towards the advancement of democracy,” he said.

Acid Attack Victim Naomi Oni Recounts Her Friend's Attitude After She Was Attacked

Acid attack victim, 21 years old Naomi Oni broke down during her first television appearance since her friend 21 years old Mary Konye was found guilty of throwing acid at her face out of envy.

Speaking on This Morning today, Naomi revealed she even contemplated suicide over the false claims that she had poured the acid over herself. She said:
'I was told there was no way of finding who this person was and after being questioned by the police and realising they were looking at me, trying to say that I done it to myself, I thought this is not going to happen. I'm not going to sit there and let them tell me that.

Recalling how her 'friend' acted throughout her ordeal, Miss Oni said:
'The morning of the day it happened. I remember that she messaged me and I spoke to her in the evening and told her what happened. She seemed shocked and told me she wanted to come and see me in hospital.

When I first had some surgery, I remember crying on the phone to her asking "who would do this to me, who hates me? I would never wish this on my worst enemy". She told me not to worry, that I'd be okay and she even attended my surprise birthday party and got me flowers and a gift card. She sat beside me and cried and everything.

How do I feel about her now? I think she's a sad person. I think I will always be the person I was and no one can stop me from that.

Photos : Ondo state Immigration Service nab baby factory operators

An alleged baby factor syndicate operated by a couple, Mr and Mrs Abiodun Ogundeji operating in Ilutuntun, Okitipupa Local Government area of Ondo State was on Wednesday Jan 29th busted by the men of the Ondo state Command of the Nigerian Immigration Service.

Acting on a tip from the Force headquarters Abuja as well as the Imo state command, the Controller General of the state command, Musa Hassan, said the baby factory had been running for 5years. 21 people including the couple running the factory, pregnant women as well as some nursing mothers were arrested in the building.

Reacting to her arrest, Mrs Happiness Ogundeji denied all allegations levelled against her stating that she was only running a herbal hospital and the women who were arrested were her patients. She said she runs a dredging and construction business, De- Choice Construction Comapany in Ore and has 3 filling stations in Port Harcourt Rivers State. Her husband Abiodun Ogundeji feigned not knowing of his wife's business saying that he only knew her to be into Construction as well as oil and gas. He said he was a Civil Engineer with Chevron, Rivers State.

Most of those arrested refused to speak to reporters but however said anonymously that they were all impregnated in Imo state and then transferred to Ondo state. Upon delivery, their babies would be taken away from them to an unknown place by Mrs Ogundeji .

They are all currently at the Lagos office of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP)

Man on trial for R*pe for 'refusing to wear a condom' during a one night stand

30 year old Imomotimi Wilson (pictured above) is on trial for r*pe for refusing to wear a condom on the third time he had s*x with a woman during a one night stand.

A man on trial for r*pe for allegedly refusing to wear a condom on the third time he had s*x with a woman in a one-night stand has told the jury it was 100 per cent consensual.

Imomotimi Wilson, 30, met his alleged victim in a pub and she agreed to go back to his house but told him she would only have s*x if he used protection.

They had consensual sex twice but on the third occasion claims that Wilson failed to use a condom.

The woman, a 40-year-old, said Wilson treated her 'like a piece of meat' as the alleged attack took place.

She said he held her hands over her head and told her 'if you love me you'll do it' before r*ping her for 15-20 seconds.

But giving evidence at his trial at Cambridge Crown Court Wilson said 'she said stop and that's when I stopped'.

He said: 'She said I feel like having s*x again and I said "Yes, I feel like having s*x with you as well again but there is no condom".

'She was romancing me, touching and kissing, and I said no, I do not want to do that because there is no condom.

'She started kissing me again and then I penetrated her. I believed 100 per cent it was consensual.

'Then she said stop and that's when I stopped. There were three seconds of penetration.'

The court heard how the pair met at The Regal pub in Cambridge on June 9 last year and took a taxi back to Wilson's shared house in the city at 2am.

She then spent most of the evening in bed with the defendant before leaving the property at around 6am.

The court heard how she phoned police later that afternoon and Wilson was arrested.

Caroline Allison, prosecuting, said: 'The prosecution say that she had made it perfectly clear in plain straight-forward language that the situation was no condom, no s*x and that nothing had happened in the intervening period that would invite a reasonable belief that she was indeed consenting to unprotected s*x.'

Wilson, of Cambridge, has pleaded not guilty to r*pe after claiming he stopped on the third time the woman said no. The trial continues.

Uzoenyi, Kwambe, Shehu for World Cup

Eguavoen : Uzoenyi, Kwambe, Shehu for WC

Former Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen rates Ejike Uzoenyi, Solomon Kwambe and Abdullahi Shehu

Former Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen believes that three member of the Nigeria Chan squad are good enough to make the final Nigeria 2014 World Cup squad.

Eguavoen tells the Nigerian Tribute that he thinks Ejike Uzoenyi, Solomon Kwambe and Abdullahi Shehu are ‘World Cup material’.

“We’re blessed with talents but Stephen Keshi should be allowed to focus on his plans for the World Cup.

“Enugu Rangers’ Ejike Uzoenyi, Kano Pillars’ Abdullahi Shehu and Sunshine Stars’ Solomon Kwambe can challenge Efe Ambrose for a spot but the wind at the higher level could blow differently, so we should support Keshi for whatever decision he makes as regard his World Cup squad,” Eguavoen said.

The Eagles face Zimbabwe at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday in the third place Play-off and Eguavoen urges the side to win the match.

“Of course, we need the losers game, we can’t afford to lay back and allow the Zimbabweans to ride over us, we must strive to take something home,” he added.

Ghana will face Libya in the Final at Cape Town stadium in the later game on Saturday.

Mother of three dies from cannabis after smoking a joint in bed

A young mother of three died after she was poisoned by the cannabis she smoked to help her get to sleep.

Gemma Moss, 31, was killed by the level of the drug in her blood, an inquest heard.

The regular churchgoer, who was found dead in her bedroom, is thought to be the first woman in Britain known to have died directly from cannabis poisoning.

Her death was caused by cannabis toxicity, and a coroner recorded a verdict of death by cannabis abuse.

The inquest was told that Miss Moss smoked half a joint a night to help her sleep.

The devout Christian had  been a frequent user but stopped for two years before her death last October.

Her family say she started using the drug again to help her sleep after becoming depressed when she split up with her boyfriend.

A female friend told police Miss Moss smoked as much as £60 worth of the drug a week, although her family disputed this.

On the night of October 28  last year Miss Moss, who had two sons, Tyler, 15, and Tessiah, eight, and a daughter who lives abroad, went to bed after rolling a joint.

She was found the following morning by Tyler’s girlfriend who called an ambulance to the flat in Bournemouth.

Miss Moss was pronounced dead at the scene.

Half a joint was found underneath her body and a wrapper containing brown and green leaves of the class B drug was discovered in her handbag.

A post mortem examination revealed that there were no obvious signs of abnormality in Miss Moss’s body. Pathologist Dr Kudair Hussein told the inquest in Bournemouth there were ‘moderate to heavy’ levels of cannabis-related chemicals in her blood.

24 Suspects Nabbed As Baby Factory Is Uncovered In Ondo State

A baby factory has been uncovered in Ilu-Titun in Okitipupa council area of Ondo State by the state command of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS. At least 24 suspects were arrested in connection with the illegal establishment. Among those nabbed by the anti-trafficking detectives of the command included five pregnant women, five nursing mothers, five babies, two of which are less than a month old and eight men whose duty it was to impregnate the women.

Also, some guards of northern extraction were picked. The arrest of the proprietor of the baby factory, Mrs Happiness Ogundeji, was after several months of intelligence gathering and discreet surveillance by officials of the command. The suspects were paraded before newsmen at the command’s headquarters in Akure, yesterday, by the state’s comptroller of NIS, Mr Musa Al-Hassan. According to reports, the proprietor, Mrs Ogundeji had to relocate to Ondo State after she was arrested in Imo State for a similar offence.

Al-Hassan told newsmen that following a tip-off, the suspects were rounded up at their hideout by a combined team of his officers and military operatives. According to him, the suspects had earlier resisted arrest following which they reinforced to effect the arrest. Vanguard gathered that the illegal operation was being carried out at a well-secured two-flat apartment in the town. The proprietor was said to have pretended that the baby factory was a natural healing home. It was gathered that young girls between the ages of 19 and 25 were recruited into the home where some young men purposely work to impregnate them.

Once a girl is pregnant, she is separated from those yet to be impregnated. After delivery, the girls are offered ridiculous amount, their babies taken from them and sold to rich men and women who pay millions of naira, depending on the sex of the baby. Twins are said to be the costliest as they go for N2.5 million. It was learnt that the Abuja office of the command learnt of the operation of the syndicate in Ondo State following a tip-off from Cross River State Command and it subsequently directed both the Ondo and Imo State commands to investigate the allegation.

Consequently, the anti-human trafficking officials of the state command led by Obisesan Abiola acting on intelligence reports burst the syndicate. It was further discovered that the proprietor is assisted in the factory by a Cameroonian. Al-Hassan said the command would always collaborate with sister agencies to rid the state of criminality. One of the pregnant girls in her early twenties simply called ‘Grace’ claimed to be a student of Lagos State University, LASU, and is engaged to the son of the proprietor. The supposed husband insisted that his mother had not committed any crime while the proprietor denied operating a baby factory.

Ogundeji said she was operating a herbal natural clinic. Items discovered at the factory were eight luxury cars, foodstuff, baby items, among others. Meanwhile, all the suspects are to be transferred to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, headquarters in Lagos after preliminary investigation by the officials of the command. The house used for the illegal business had been sealed off by security operatives.

Ex NAICOM Chief sentenced to 15 years in prison for N10.4million fraud

Okechukwu Chukwulozie, a former Commissioner of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) yesterday began his journey to Kuje Prison in Abuja to serve  15 years  over N10.4 million fraud.

He was convicted  last Wednesday at an Abuja High Court on 5 counts charge for using private interest to furnish his official residence and demanding for a percentage in a contract he awarded.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission(ICPC),in 2007 jointly charged Chukwulozie, his wife, Angela; and a former Deputy Commissioner in charge of Finance and Administration, Adedolapo Ogungbe to court the N10.4 million fraud without option of fine.

It was yesterday that Chief Chukwulozie began his journey to Kuje prison from ICPC detention cell as it was late yesterday to convey him to Kuje after securing his conviction papers.

Delivering judgment, Justice Mudashiru Oniyangi, said that the court sentenced Chukwulozie to three years on each of the five counts he is convicted for and it will run concurrently.

Oniyangi, held that the ICPC had proved all the ingredients of Section 19 of the the ICPC Act against him.

“The ICPC has proved beyond reasonable doubt that a commissioner of NICON, Chukwulozie, demanded fifty per cent of fees paid to liquidators of Gateway Insurance Plc.

“Beyond reasonable doubt is the standard of evidence required to validate a criminal conviction. Generally the prosecution bears the burden of proof and is required to prove their case.

“The prosecution has presented to court evidence to support its charges against the convict.

“In this case, they have done so. The court hereby sentences you to three years each on each of the five counts level against you, which will run concurrently.

However, Justice Oniyangi  held that the ICPC had failed to prove its case against the second (Angela) and third accused (Ogungbe) persons.

“The court discharges the second and third accused persons charged with aiding and abetting the crime.

Man ties his 7 children to a wheel-barrow; attempts to sell them

Palpable confusion reigned in Owerri, yesterday, as a father tied his seven children, including his triplet, to a wheel-barrow and was heading to an unknown destination before officials of Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development intervened.

The 44-year-old man, Israel Dike,  is a native of Odenkume, Obowo Local Government Aarea of Imo State, but resides in Ugwu Ekwema, Egbu Road, Owerri. The children’s hands were securely tied to a wheelbarrow while the man was soliciting for buyers for the children, saying he was fed up with his dwindling economic fortunes.

A staff of the ministry said

“Following a tip off, a high powered team led by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Nma Onyechere, quickly went and rescued the children.”

Apart from disclosing that he planned selling some of them with a view to enabling him take proper care of others, Dike equally lamented that Governor Rochas Okorocha put him in the mess he has found himself today.

FG Plans To Phase Out Pure Water Satchets & Other Plastics

The Federal Ministry of Environment has developed a draft action plan for the phasing out of light weight non-biodegradable plastics in the country, a top official of the ministry, said, yesterday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Abuja, said that the draft action plan had already been adopted by stakeholders in the sector. He recalled that the ministry, in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, UNIDO, had in December 2013, organised a workshop to sensitise Nigerians on the process.

“What we intend to do now is to follow the implementation of the action plan since the awareness has already started; the next step is to source funds from UNIDO to implement the plan. “Once we have funds, we will continue with other activities in the process of phasing out heavy non-biodegradable plastics.” The official said it was not possible to completely phase out non-biodegradable plastics because of its importance in the society. He cited the example of a plastic chair, which is a non-biodegradable component, to buttress his point. He said that the ministry would start with the phasing out of light weight non-degradable plastics such as table water sachets and polythene bags.

“Those countries that have succeeded in phasing out the substance started with placing a ban on the light weight ones.“Countries like China and South Africa have placed outright ban on light weight plastic bags while some other countries have placed tax levies on the manufacture, retailer and buyers of light weight bags. “We are going to be gradual in the phasing out process as well, so that we will not cause havoc to the livelihood of people working in the industry. “We will also use alternative sources that are economically feasible and environment-friendly to replace the non-degradable products,” the official said.

He further said that the ministry would start the process of phasing out with a pilot project whereby manufacturers would be required to introduce a substance called “addictive” that would reduce the non-biodegradable component in their products. NAN reports that several countries have adopted measures to reduce the production and use of plastic materials by the imposition of taxes, fines, restriction or outright ban of plastic shopping bags. The countries include South Africa, Taiwan, Kenya, Rwanda, Bangladesh, Mecedonia, China, Hong Kong, Denmark, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico and United Arab Emirates, among others.

Kanye West confronts Anna Wintour over her refusal to use Kim Kardashian on the February cover of Vogue

Kim has graced almost every notable magazine cover in the world but Vogue. This is because his close friend and editor in Chief Anna Wintour doesn't consider Kim classy enough for the magazine. And Kim desperately wants to be on it because it will cement her status as a certified cover girl and star.Every certified female star has graced it's cover ,some even severally.

One thing I like about Kanye, he stands up for his lady

Radar online reports
" Kanye West is said to be insulted that his fiancée Kim Kardashian has been overlooked again in favour of the multi-talented Girls writer and director Lena Dunham.

The hip-hop artist allegedly confronted Vogue’s chief editor Anna Wintour at the Beverly Hills Polo Lounge, demanding to know why Lena had been deemed a worthy cover star for February's issue.

Kanye believes Kim has a greater appeal than Lena and argued she is ‘just as talented as Lena, if not more so'.‘Kanye knows that it’s always been a huge dream of Kim’s to be on the Vogue cover and Kanye wants to make it comes true. If nothing else, Kanye is persistent.'‘He’s upset that Anna isn’t willing to do him this personal favour and put Kim on the cover.’

This is not the first time that Kanye has spoken of his desire to see his future wife appear in Vogue.During an interview with Ryan Seacrest last year, he described Kim as ‘the most intriguing woman right now’ and said there was 'no way' she shouldn't appear on the cover.

And during Kanye’s recent concert tour stop in Brooklyn, Anna sat some distance away from Kim despite sharing a VIP box.

Dear Daddy, you must accept I’m a lesbian; Gay daughter of Hong Kong billionaire writes him an open letter

Last week, Hong Kong billionaire, Cecil Chao, 77, was in the news after he reportedly doubled his reward ($130million) for any man who would woo his daughter (pictured left) away from her lesbian lover, marry her and give him grandchildren.

The daughter, Gigi Chao, 34, who is already married to her partner Sean Eav & resides in France has written an open letter to her father asking for him to come to terms with the fact that she is a lesbian.

The letter was published today in Chinese newspaper, South China Morning Post.

Dear Daddy,
I thought the timing was right for us to have a candid conversation.

You are one of the most mentally astute, energetic yet well mannered and hard-working people this humble earth has ever known.

Your confidence, quick wit, and charisma brightens any room you enter.

I love you very much, and I think I can speak for my brothers also, that we have the utmost respect for you as a father and role model in business.

I am sorry that people have been saying insensitive things about you lately. The truth is, they don’t understand that I will always forgive you for thinking the way you do, because I know you think you are acting in my best interests. And we both don’t care if anybody else understands.

As your daughter, I would want nothing more than to make you happy. But in terms of relationships, your expectations of me and the reality of who I am, are not coherent.

I am responsible for some of this misplaced expectation, because I must have misled you to hope there were other options for me. You know I’ve had male lovers in the past, and I’ve had happy, albeit short-lived, relationships. I found myself temporarily happy, buoyed by the freshness, the attention, the interest, of someone physically stronger than myself.

But it was always short-lived, as I quickly lost patience, and felt an indescribable discomfort in their presence. It usually made me frustrated, and I would yearn for my freedom again. I’ve broken a few hearts, hearts of good, honest and loving men, and I’m sorry that it had to be so.

But with Sean, a woman, somehow it was different. I am comfortable and satisfied with my life and completely at ease with her. I know it’s difficult for you to understand how I could feel romantically attracted to a woman; I suppose I can’t really explain it either. It just happens, peacefully and gently, and after so many years, we still love each other very much.

My regret is that you have no idea how happy I am with my life, and there are aspects of my life that you don’t share. I suppose we don’t need each other’s approval for our romantic relationships, and I am sure your relationships are really fantastic too.

However, I do love my partner Sean, who does a good job of looking after me, ensuring I am fed, bathed and warm enough every day, and generally cheering me up to be a happy, jolly girl. She is a large part of my life, and I am a better person because of her.

Now, I’m not asking you to be best of friends; however, it would mean the world to me if you could just not be so terrified of her, and treat her like a normal, dignified human being.
I understand it is difficult for you to understand, let alone accept this truth.

I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out who I am, what is important in my life, who I love and how best to live life, as an expression of all these questions. I am proud of my life, and I would not choose to live it any other way (except also figuring out how to be gentler on the planet).

I’m sorry to mislead you to think I was only in a lesbian relationship because there was a shortage of good, suitable men in Hong Kong.

There are plenty of good men, they are just not for me.

Wishing you happiness.
Patiently yours,
Your daughter, Gigi.

Ghana beat Nigeria 4-1 on penalties to reach Final

Ghana beat Nigeria 4-1 on penalties after the sides ended goalless after extra-time in the African Nations Championship semi-final at Free State Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Final will be between Ghana and Libya while Nigeria will face Zimbabwe for the bronze medal on Saturday.

The Black Stars played a lot of the match with 10-men after they had Kwabina Adusei sent off in the 64th minute for a second bookable offence.

Neither side were able to dominate in the opening minutes although Nigeria looked the better of the two teams as Ghana stuck to their style of sitting back to defend, while launching attacks from the flanks.

Attobrah came close for Ghana in the 10th minute, but saw his shot deflected for a corner by the Nigerian defence. Abubakar Ibrahim however responded for the Super Eagles two minutes later, he could only managed to strike the side netting

The Ghanaians resorted to brute tackling to curtail the Nigerian attack with both Ejike Uzoenyi and Kunle Odunlami falling victims to heavy challenges inside the opening twenty minutes.

Abubakar was unlucky not to open scoring for Nigeria in the 27th minute, as his long range shot came off the crossbar, with Adams already well beaten.

Abubakar's missed effort sparked Nigeria into action as they ceaselessly attacked the Ghanaians who did well to keep them at bay. Uzoenyi came close to scoring for Nigeria in the 37th minute, but his shot went wide as the game remained goalless going into the break.

The first real chance of the second half fell to Ifeanyi Ede in the 52nd minute as he found his way between two Ghanaian defenders, but the Enyimba frontman could not keep his resulting shot on target.

The game remained a fierce tactical battle between the two sides, with neither of them refusing to break rank until Nigeria were handed a numerical advantage when Ghana's centre-back was deservedly sent off in the 63rd minute for yet another high boot challenge on Abubakar, barely a minute after Imenger came on in place of Ede.

Rabiu Ali missed a chance to put Nigeria ahead as he shot wide after Adams misjudged an Uzoenyi free-kick. Shehu and Esieme also had chances of their own, but their shots were not enough to trouble the Nigerian goalkeeper.

Nigeria continued to pile pressure on Ghana during the dying minutes of the regulation time, but it failed to yield any meaningful result as the game went into extra time.

Ghana's numerical disadvantage did not reflect in the opening minutes of extra time as they managed to push Nigeria backwards with a more purposeful display. Imenger had a penalty appeal turned down in the 96th minute after he wentto ground inside the Ghanaian box.

A minute later, Imenger missed a chance to put Nigeria ahead as his shot went over the bar after good work from Uzoenyi.

Ghana had a rare sight at goal in the second half of extra-time through Afful, but Agbim dealt with the threat very easily, as Christian Pyagbara came on for Abubakar Aliyu a moments later.

Imenger missed a golden opportunity to win the game for Nigeria in the 118th minute as he could only put his shot wide after a good shot from Uzoenyi with the keeper at his mercy. With both teams unable to score after extra-time, the game went into penalties.

Michael Akuffo scored the first spot kick for Ghana, and Uzoenyi levelled for Nigeria. Anobaah and Ainooson converted their respective spot kicks for Ghana, while Kwambe and Uzochukwu missed their kicks for Nigeria. Attobrah converted for Ghana to make it 4-1 in favour of the Black Stars as they booked their place in the final against Libya.

Libya reach Chan Final

Libya beat Zimbabwe 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out to reach the African Nations Championship final after the sides ended goalless after extra-time at the Free State Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Libyan goalkeeper Mohamed Nashnush Abduala was the star with two saves during the penalties and scoring the deciding final penalty which takes them close to the winners’ trophy and $750,000 cash prize.

Zimbabwe who stopped Mali in the quarterfinal dominated the most of the 120 minutes of normal play that ended goalless. Simba Sithole, Ali Sadiki and Kudakwashe Mahachi missed scoring opportunities for the Warriors of Zimbabwe.

Sithole scored in the 77th minute, but goal was cancelled for offside during the build-up. Muataz Mahde Abdelraman Fetori also came close to scoring for Libya.

During the penalty kicks that decided who qualifies for the final, Libya’s Elmutasem Abushanaf, Mohamed Ghanudi, Abdelrahman fetori, Mohamed Elgadi and Mohamed Nashnush Abdula scored, while Ali Salama, Motasem Sabbou and Mohamed Abrahim Mahfud missed.

Zimbabwe goalkeeper George Chigova kept his team in the shoot-out after stopping two successive penalties, but his teammates Ali Sadiki, Milton Ncube and Peter Moyo failed to convert their chances. Eric Chipeta, Dannu Phiri, Hardlife Zvirekwi and Patson Jaure converted for the Warriors who will now have to wait for the play-off game.

Enugu State Deputy Governor's Poultry Farm Gets Invaded By Ministry Of Enviroment; All The Birds Seized

About 3,500 chickens and about 40 crates of eggs were on Monday carted away from the poultry farm of the Enugu State Deputy Governor, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi, as officials of the state Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) and Ministry of Environment invaded his official lodge, allegedly on the “orders from above.” According to reports, the carting away of the chickens and eggs is preparatory for the eventual destruction of the farm.

The ECTDA and Environment Ministry officials who were led by their commissioners, Messrs Ikechukwu Ugwuegede and Nnaemeka Chukwuone respectively, arrived the lodge at about 1pm on Monday to inform the Deputy Governor of an order to evacuate the birds and demolish the poultry which the government claimed was constituting public health hazard.

Onyebuchi, who was with his wife and personal aides, including his security officers attached to his office at the lodge, which had been under renovation since September 2012, did not resist the action of the officials, who later brought in four trucks and evacuated the chickens to an unknown destination. When the government officials mobilised by the two commissioners could not evacuate the entire birds, Ugwuegede was said to have mobilised more uniformed officials of his ministry, who spent about an hour evacuating the birds and the crates of eggs into the four trucks and took them away.

Shocked by the evacuation, the Enugu State Deputy Governor Sunday Onyebuchi described it as a wicked act of impunity against him. That the action was shocking, was intended to humiliate him, and that those behind the act were hiding their motive.
According to him, while speaking with newsmen yesterday:

They mentioned the environmental or health hazard emanating from my poultry farm. In their statement, they claimed they had asked me to clean up the place and I refused. Let them produce a letter asking me to do that. It is not true.

The poultry farm was a designated Agriculture Unit, the structure had been used as a poultry farm before I became deputy governor.  I have operated the poultry farm since 2008. That was why I put in my Assets Declaration at the end of my first term and at the beginning of this term that I have operated the poultry farm and this was verified by the Code of Conduct Bureau. How suddenly did my poultry farm become a health hazard when it has been in existence since 2008? Let them deny that there is no bigger poultry farm, piggery and cattle ranch in the Governor’s Lodge!

My poultry farm was properly run and cleaned because it was run with the technical support from the state Ministry of Agriculture. If they succeed in deceiving the public, they can never deceive God. As I am talking to you, the over 3,000 chickens confiscated yesterday and their whereabouts are unknown. They also removed bags of feeds and feeders and other materials.

Asked of his next action, the deputy governor said:

“For now, I am presenting the matter to God, because the person behind it is powerful and my challenging him will be like using a vehicle to collide with a moving train.”

The ECTDA Commissioner, however, declined to comment on the development when approached by newsmen who rushed to the scene from the nearby Press Unit of the Government House, saying he did not invite any journalist to witness the exercise.

Photos : Husband who kept vigil by his wife's grave everyday for 20years dies

When Rocky Abalsamo's wife died in 1993, part of him died too.Out of sadness and longing, he would hold vigil by her grave site at St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury all day, every day, rarely eating or drinking and weathering all temperatures and conditions.

Now, over 20 years after his beautiful Julia 'Julita' passed away, Rocky 'Roque' continues to sit next to his beloved, after being buried in the plot next to her.Rocky died on Janaury 22 at Stonehedge Health Care Center in West Roxbury after several months of declining health. He was 97.

They met as teenagers in a cafe in their native Buenos Aires. Rocky was sitting with his back to Julita when he overheard her talking with friends “about the soul, about life, goodness,” Even before seeing her face, he decided, “This is for me. I must know her.”

He said he fell in love with her “not because she was” – he made the symbol for an hourglass figure with his hands – “but she was,” he added, making the gesture again.

“She was pure love. Her beauty was a gift apart, a reward.”

They shared a first kiss on Sept. 16, 1937, a date he celebrated annually. They married the following April. After their daughter Angela, they had a son, Roque Jr.Rocky worked for three decades as a civil engineer while Julita tended their family.

They followed their children to the United States in 1971 and settled in Boston a year later
Rocky and Julita had been married for 55 years when she died in 1993 of complications after heart surgery. Distraught, he began spending his days at St. Joseph Cemetery.

“She is part of me, so here I am whole,” he said. “Being here makes me feel better. Not good, but better. I do it for Julita, and for myself.”

Among the belongings he carried daily to the cemetery was a photograph of a lovely woman with green eyes and dark hair. On the back, she had written: “Today the sky smiles to me. I see you. You look at me. Today I believe in God. With all my love, Julita.”

The Globe’s 2000 story, headlined “Endless Love,” described Rocky’s ritual:
“On cold days Rocky wears a patched and faded green parka. He owns other coats, but Julita knew this one best, so he will not change. He greets Julita — ‘I am here!’ Then he unfolds a blue beach chair — he leaves it every night against her headstone — placing it on a piece of plywood to keep it from sinking into the soft earth. Then Rocky relaxes, reading, writing, and reflecting. For exercise and to keep warm, he walks around nearby headstones engraved Cicciu, St. Clair, Doyle, Galvin, and Daley.

“He rarely eats or drinks, in part out of respect but also so he does not need a bathroom. On special occasions he toasts Julita with sparkling cider; he will do so Dec. 20, her birthday. Some days he brings a cassette player. On one tape they sing together, a Spanish lullaby. Rocky’s strong tenor is answered by Julita’s sweet soprano. Hearing Julita’s voice brings a smile to his face, a mist to his clear blue eyes.

“When dark comes, Rocky prays. He sprinkles crumbs on the grave, so chipmunks will keep Julita company after he has gone. Sadness returning, he says goodbye. He rubs her name on the red granite stone. The ritual has left an indelible mark.”

Over time, what began as a personal act of mourning touched dozens of others who came to the cemetery. Former strangers brought him meals, boots, hats, and scarves, and they decorated Julita’s grave with plants, ceramic angels, flags, and stuffed animals. He told them stories and shared his wisdom about life and love.

Rocky continued his daily pilgrimage until 2005, when his son was killed in a car crash in California. Although he still visited Julita’s grave regularly, Rocky spent more time with his surviving family members.

“I think he had a realization at that point that we need to let go and we need to continue to live,” his daughter said.
His last visit was in July, before he fell ill.

Gay trials suspended in Nigeria over violence fears

Bauchi - Two Islamic courts in Nigeria have been forced to suspend the trials of 10 men accused of homosexuality because of fears of mob violence, judges and officials have said.

An angry crowd last week pelted stones at seven men suspected of breaking Islamic law banning homosexuality after their hearing was adjourned at the Upper Sharia Court in the northern city of Bauchi.

Police were forced to use teargas and fire shots in the air to disperse the mob, who were demanding summary trial and execution for the defendants.

The seven had been due to reappear before the same court on Tuesday.

But registrar Unguwar Jaki told AFP: "We can't continue with the trial in view of the security breach we had during the last court session.

"The court will have to suspend the trial pending the review of the security situation with relevant authorities to avoid a repeat of the mob action we saw last week."

Nigeria banned same-sex marriage and civil unions earlier this month in a move that won widespread support in the religiously conservative country but triggered international outrage.

Homosexuality was already banned under sharia Islamic law, which exists alongside state and federal laws in the majority Muslim north of Nigeria and carries the death sentence.

New trial date

A separate trial of three other suspects at another sharia court in the Tudun Alkali area of the city was also put on hold.

"The trial has been suspended because of the stoning incident in the other court, which we are trying to avoid here", said judge Nuhu Mohammed Dumi.

"The remand notice for the suspects expired today [Tuesday] but we will have to extend it."

Dumi suggested that the new trial date would not be publicised and the suspects brought to court in secret to avoid unrest.

Lawyer Suleiman Musa, defending the three, has objected to his clients' continued detention but Dumi said the decision was for their own safety.

"The families of the three suspects... came to me requesting bail and I told them that it was in their interests to stay in prison because they risk losing their lives at the hands of an angry mob if they are released on bail," he said.

"They realised the danger."

Chan 2014 preview : Ghana vs Nigeria

Tonight’s Chan semi-final between Ghana and Nigeria is lining up to be a classic west African derby.

The likes of John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses, Kevin-Prince Boateng and André Ayew won’t be there, but with some of Africa’s biggest clubs, such as Asante Kotoko and Enyimba, well represented, fans in Bloemfontein should be set for an exciting spectacle.

Nigeria have grown stronger and stronger as the tournament has progressed, following up a 2-1 Group A loss to Mali with a 4-2 victory over Mozambique before knocking hosts Bafana Bafana out of the competition with a 3-1 win.

And while their quarterfinal clash with Morocco again highlighted the Super Eagles’ weakness in defence, the team showed amazing strength of character to win that match 4-3.

So far, the continental champions have found a winning formula, having scored an average of exactly three goals per game, while conceding two.

These are of course not the same Nigerian players that won Afcon a year ago, but with the same coach, Stephen Keshi, at the helm, Nigeria are a side who have developed a strong sense of winning entitlement.

Ghana meanwhile have been more conservative in their approach, the Black Stars unbeaten at Chan after 1-0 wins over Ethiopia and Congo Brazzaville together with a 1-1 draw with Libya in the group phase, before edging out the DRC 1-0 in the last eight. They have scored just four goals but only conceded one.

That’s not to say though that the Ghanaians have not been playing some exciting and attractive football, some of their combination play on the counter-attack has been outstanding. It has been more a case of poor finishing, Yahaya Mohammed the main culprit, although the more youthful Seidu Bansey has also been wayward.

The Black Stars do however have the best goalkeeper still remaining at Chan: Stephen Adams is a solid number one, who can make spectacular saves, but also does the simple things well and efficiently instilling a sense of calm at the back, unlike the more flamboyant and inconsistent Chigozie Agbim in the Super Eagles' goal.

Key players for the west African derby

Richard Mpong (Ghana) : The Asante Kotoko 23-year-old is the go-to man in midfield, the player standing out so far with his speed, trickery and clever passing. The number 7 is a busy, industrious left-footed attacker who makes things happen for those around him.

Christantus Ejike (Nigeria) : Striker Ifeanyi Ede may have three Chan goals to his name, but it is another number 7 who has really stood out for Keshi’s side, Ejike. His 90th minute equaliser against Morocco could well be the best goal of a tournament. The 21-year-old left-footer from the Rangers International club is very similar to Mpong: a diminutive, quick and skilful player who is a tough man to shackle.

*The match takes place at the Free State Stadium with kick off scheduled for 20H30. The Libya v Zimbabwe match starts at 17H00.
