Paul Walker's last film Fast & Furious 7 to resume production in April

After a long hiatus due to the death of star Paul Walker, Fast & Furious 7 is gearing up to resume shooting.

Sources say Universal will restart production on the action franchise on or near April 1, giving the studio and director James Wan almost one year until the film is due to hit theaters April 10, 2015. The remainder of the shoot will last from six to eight weeks, according to insiders. Cast and crew will be called back to Atlanta, where filming had been scheduled to resume after Thanksgiving.

Fast 7 was about halfway finished when Walker was killed in a car crash in Valencia, Calif., requiring its release date to be scrapped and Wan, writer Chris Morgan and Universal to pore over existing footage and tweak the script. Insiders now believe Walker's character can be "retired" -- rather than killed off -- in a way that will allow the franchise to continue. Universal declined comment.

Oscar Pistorius dating 19-year-old Leah Skye Malan as he awaits trial

Oscar Pistorius has reportedly been dating a student paramedic in the weeks leading up to his trial for the murder of his ex-girlfriend.

The double amputee met 19-year-old Leah Skye Malan in Mozambique last December while she was holidaying with her mother, father and younger brother.

Miss Malan, who is the Paralympian's first girlfriend since he shot model Reeva Steenkamp last year, has been supporting him in the run-up to his court case, it was reported by The Sun.

leah skye
A source told the paper: 'They both seem really into each other.

'She's helped support him through this difficult time and has introduced him to all her family. They have embraced him.'

Her father Andre may even attend the trial which starts on Monday.

The pair have been on a number of dates, but Pistorius is believed to have disguised himself while out.
Miss Malan has also invited the 27-year-old to her family's farmhouse in near Potchefstroom, around two hours from Johannesburg where she studies at university.

The revelations emerged as dramatic new video was released showing Pistorius using a shotgun at a firing range months before he fatally shot his model girlfriend.

Sky News, which published the footage, also revealed a series of photographs showing the Paralympian firing the same silver 9mm pistol he used when he killed Ms Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year.

The prosecution says he had a fight with Reena Steenkamp before killing her by firing shots through a door in the bathroom of his home on February 14 last year.

He says he shot the model and reality TV star after mistaking her for a dangerous intruder in the night.

On the anniversary of her death on Valentine's Day, Pistorius claimed her death was a 'devastating accident'.
Pistorius, 27, known as Blade Runner, posted the letter on his official Oscar Pistorious website.

'No words can adequately capture my feelings about the devastating accident that has caused such heartache for everyone who truly loved - and continues to love Reeva,' he said.

President Jonathan's cousin abduction : Kidnappers demand N500million ransom

The kidnappers of Chief Inengite Nitabai, cousin to President Goodluck Jonathan, have demanded the sum of N500m ransom to set him free.

Nitabai, aged 70, was abducted last Sunday by ten armed men at his Otuoke residence in Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa State and taken away in his private Sports Utitlity Vehicle after collecting N400,000 from his wife.

The vehicle was later recovered at Unuegbum  waterfront where it was abandoned, an indication that the gunmen escaped through the creek.

The victim, his wife, his wife’s sister and three of his children were in the house when the gunmen struck.
But that respite it was learnt came the way of the family when the kidnappers contacted them to make the ransom demand Thursday.

It was learnt that the outrageous demand unsettled the family members who had since resorted to prayers for divine intervention.

Though his children had declined media enquiries on the matter so as not to jeopardize police efforts,  a security source told Saturday Vanguard that the abductors threatened to kill their victim if the family failed to accede to their demand..

The security source who spoke anonymously  said the family had constituted a committee to evaluate the demand, establish negotiations with the abductors and facilitate his release.

The kidnappers, according to the source, as usual warned against the involvement of security operatives in the matter.

“The kidnappers contacted the family four days after and demanded a whooping sum of N500m. It is believed that the family of the victim has begun negotiations with the hoodlums,” he said.

The troubled family members had shortly after the incident chose to maintained silence on media enquiry on the matter for security reason in spite  of growing anxiety following the refusal of the kidnappers to establish contact with them.

The state police spokesman, Mr. Alex Akhigbe could not be reached for comment but there had been massive security presence in the community with operatives combing the creeks and waterways of the state in search of the kidnappers.

How Michael Jordan Made $90 Million In 2013

Nike released the Air Jordan 10 “Powder Blue” retro sneaker on Saturday, 20 years after the first Jordan 10s hit shelves. Like all the Jordan retro releases, this one was highly anticipated and first-day sales hit $35 million. For perspective, in all of 2013, Adidas sold $40 million in the U.S. of the signature shoes of its top star, Derrick Rose. The Bulls’ current star guard isn’t the only one operating in the shadow of Jordan.

Reigning MVP LeBron James is the top seller among current NBA players with $300 million at retail last year for his Nike shoes, according to data tracker SportsOneSource. Jordan crushed those numbers with $2.25 billion in U.S. retail basketball sales in 2013. It has been more than a decade since Michael Jordan last appeared in an NBA uniform, but MJ most certainly has still got it.

Jordan made an estimated $90 million last year thanks to the rich partnership he enjoys with Nike. His 2013 earnings eclipsed those of all other retired or current athletes save boxer Floyd Mayweather. It marked Jordan’s biggest earnings year yet in a career paved with monster paydays, which peaked in Jordan’s last season with the Bulls (1997-98) at $80 million.

Jordan entered the NBA three decades ago after three years at North Carolina, where he announced himself to the country his freshman year with the game-winning shot in the 1982 National Championship game. Nike saw the marketing potential of Jordan, drafted third overall by the Bulls, and offered him a five-year contract worth $500,000 annually plus royalties. It was a huge sum at the time for a shoe deal, but it was a partnership that would lead both parties to unprecedented heights.

Jordan took the court his rookie year in 1984 in a pair of red and black Air Jordans, which matched the Bulls’ uniforms, but did not feature any white per NBA protocol. The league banned the shoes and fined Michael $5,000 every game for wearing them. Nike covered the fines and capitalized on the attention with a commercial with the following voiceover: “On September 15th, Nike created a revolutionary new basketball shoe. On October 18th, the NBA threw them out of the game. Fortunately, the NBA can’t stop you from wearing them.” A marketing juggernaut was born.

New Air Jordans followed annually in assorted colors and there have been a myriad of special releases along the way. The retro business makes up about half of the Jordan shoe business today. “Nike has made an art form of unrequited demand,” says SportsOneSource analyst Matt Powell regarding the retro releases. “Making sure that there is supply well below demand keeps things fresh.”

Retail shoe sales for the Jordan Brand in the U.S. grew 11% last year to $2.7 billion, with basketball making up 84% of that, according to Powell. Roughly 50% to 55% of that goes to Nike. If you factor in sales of Jordan apparel, the international Jordan business and sales at Nike stores, the Jordan brand is contributing roughly $2 billion of revenue to Nike, which posted sales of $26 billion over the last 12 months. Jordan, the man, gets a cut of every shoe, hoodie or pair of shorts sold by Nike under the Jordan Brand. We estimate MJ’s take from Nike was at least $75 million last year. “Given that he is the name that launched the brand, you could argue that he deserves more,” says Phil de Picciotto, founder and president of Octagon. “Jordan is the perfect athlete.”

FG Drops Plans To Ban Tokunbo Vehicles

The Federal Government has reversed its plans to ban the importation of fairly used vehicles also known as Tokunbo, in line with popular opposition to the policy since it was announced late last year. The shift in position was taken at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting penultimate week, following intense debate on the issue with the conclusion that the planned ban was not in the best interest of the nation's economy for now.

The Minister of Industry,Trade and Investment, Dr. Olusegun Aganga, disclosed this in Kaduna on Friday, during a facility tour of one of the nation's automobile assembly plants, Peugeot Automobile of Nigeria, Kaduna.

According to him, government has since realised that despite the laudable intention of the policy, the prevailing socio-economic circumstances in the country for now would not be supportive of it.

Stakeholders in the import sector who roundly condemned the plans have been locked in a fierce debate over its desirability or otherwise with the automobile manufacturing industry who saw the policy as long overdue.

But Aganga said despite the new automotive policy in place, the government would not ban the importation of fairly used vehicles because of its socio-economic importance to the country.

Rather than banning, the minister noted that Nigeria must work towards providing alternative cars. Hesaid the idea to ban the imports was aimed at revamping the auto industry adding that a lot more needed to be put in place before adopting such policy because of its apparent backlash.

The minister, who said he was at PAN to assess how the automobile company was taking the opportunity of the new automotive policy of the government, saidthough Tokunbo vehicles would still be imported into the country, government would do everything possible to ensure that affordable and new vehicles are produced for Nigerians.

Theministersaid,"We studied what was done in Pakistan, India and South Africa. It is normal that in most countries they ban the importation of Tokunbo cars because that will help the demand of the local manufacturers.

"However, for Nigeria, we discussed and we said we are not going to ban Tokunbo vehicles because of the socio-economic problems we have in the country. We must work towards providing alternative cars before we even consider placing a ban on them.

"So, in Nigeria we have not banned it yet. If we slow down the demand, it will slow down the pace of growth. If you look at the cars today, for every new car that is imported, almost six Tokunbo vehicles are imported into the country. That tells you that the economy of the country is a priority.

"When you see that, as a country, you cannot afford to place a ban. The Federal Executive Council has said we are not banning Tokunbo vehicles until we have alternative for them. So, Tokunbo cars will still be imported into the country and we will do everything possible to make sure we can produce affordable and new cars for Nigerians. It is important that we provide an environment and the alternative for Nigerians before we embark on banning Tokunbo cars."

The woman was shot dead and secretly buried in the area without her husband's consent to cover up the crime.

The police also allegedly recovered arms during the arrest of the suspects who have been handed over to the State Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja, Lagos for further investigation.

The incident happened at Mechanic Bus Stop near the Baale's palace in Mebamu area in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos.

I made over N50million from MTN callerback tunes for "Mandela song" - Harrysong

Harrysong who is signed to Kcee's Fivestar music and wrote Kcee's limpopo told Punch that these days he charges as much as 1 million naira to write a song..He also said he made over 50M from MTN callerback tunes for his "Mandela song".

“Before now we charged between N100, 000 and N2000, 000 for a song. Today I charge as much as 1million to write a song. Truth is, Nigerian artistes have begun to appreciate songwriters. They pay me my money and appreciate me. I have written a lot of songs but I don’t talk about them because Nigerian artistes don’t like it when the songwriters take credit for composing songs for them.”

The proceeds from the caller-back tune is actually worth more than N50m. Truth is, I was paid a lot of money;  you know -  when they say money that can change someone’s life. That’s the value of what I received .I can’t reveal the exact amount because we work as a team. So, all the money realised is shared among us. You just want to forget all the years of suffering. It’s not a mere hype because the money is there.

The song is everywhere. You go to South-Africa , the girls are crazy about it."

Nollywood actress, Yetunde Akilapa, who was beaten after she was caught in an unknown house with a bunch of keys says she is cleansed and  that her ‘kleptomaniac’ habit was not natural.According to The Nation, she said:

“I am not quitting again.  God has finally shamed my critics and enemies.  It’s true I have not been around for two weeks.  I was going through marathon fast and prayers.

First, I had to go to my hometown on my mother’s invitation.  That was where I stayed for about two weeks for spiritual cleansing, and I thank God I have triumphed over my enemies.  The devil has lost the battle.  I am a conqueror forever,I am a member of Redeemed Christian Church of God in Ikorodu, where I reside.

But I only attend Christ Embassy Church, Agidingbi, Lagos, once in a while.

My friend also introduced me to a Christ Apostolic Church in Ketu, Lagos, where I also attend deliverance services.  I don’t discriminate , as long as it’s all for my benefit. Now, I am happy that the battle is over.  As I speak to you, I am on a movie location with some of my colleagues.  They are all happy that I am back.  I pray that any weapon fashioned against me again shall never prosper,”

Man sues Macdonalds for $1.5million for giving him only one napkin

A man is suing Macdonalds for $1.5million for giving him only one napkin and refusing to give him another when he asked for it.

TMZ reports

McDonalds has made a new golden arch enemy - a California man is suing the company for $1.5million... because he says he only got one napkin with his meal. Webster Lucas claims he was stiffed on napkins at the Mickey D's in Pacoima, CA on January 29th -- after ordering a Quarter Pounder Deluxe - and when he went up to the counter to ask for more, he was rudely rebuffed by the manager ... who insisted he already got some. According to his lawsuit, Lucas, who is black, then retorted, "I should have went to eat at the Jack-in-the-Box because I didn't come here to argue over napkins. I came here to eat."That's when Lucas says things got racist -- claiming the manager (a Mexican-American) mumbled something about "you people."Lucas subsequently emailed the general manager to complain - insisting he couldn't work because of the "undue mental anguish" he was suffering as a result of the napkin debacle -- and says he was insultingly offered free burgers in return. Lucas wants to super size instead - $1.5 million.

How 2-Year Old Girl Was Murdered By Mother’s BoyFriend For Being Too Slow At Toilet Training

A 2-year old girl Tanilla Warrick-Deaves was murdered in her mother’s home in Australia, in 2011 for being too slow at toilet training. Tanilla was murdered by 30-year old Warren James Ross, her mother’s boyfriend, who became frustrated that she was not toilet-trained.

On this particular day, he kept beating her and he repeatedly banged her head on a glass shower screen and cupboard door to make himself feel better, while her mom watched.

The beatings were so severe that she lay unconscious in a pram for two days until she eventually stopped breathing, daily mail reports.

After a long trial, Tanilla’s mom was found guilty last year of manslaughter for refusing to stop her boyfriend from beating her daughter or calling for medical help. She was sentenced to 12years in prison, which was reduced to nine years after she agreed to give testimony against Ross, her former boyfriend.

During Ross’s trial, he remained rude and threatened people in court including using offensive language towards members of the media. When the jury delivered the guilty verdict he yelled: ‘It’s not over,’ before breaking down in tears.

He was in court again this week as those close to Tanilla read victim impact statements to the judge before sentencing.

Tanilla's father and his partner during one of the trials

The girl’s father, Adrian Warrick, who has Tanilla’s name tattooed on his arm told the NSW Supreme Court he had gone through ‘every parent’s worst nightmare’ and he could not understand why Ross abused his daughter because she was not toilet trained as quickly as he wanted.

‘Why was it so important to punish her so harsh that it took her life?

‘I can only imagine what Tanilla went through and the fear she faced through her ... ordeal.’

‘What did she do so bad that gave you the right to hurt Tanilla? None whatsoever. She was a defenceless child, I hope that Ross would never be released. That's what my daughter deserves. Any child does. For what she had to go through, such a person doesn't deserve to see the light of day in my eyes’, he said.

Sentencing will continue in May.

There’s No Shame Being Black - Lupita Nyong’o + How She Saved African Girl From Using Dencia’s Bleaching Cream

30-year Old Kenyan actress yesterday while attending the 7th annual Essence Black Women In Hollywood luncheon in Beverly Hills said, a girl wrote to her about how she saved her from using pop singer, Dencia’s Whitenicious cream. Read her touching story and how she managed to see herself has a beautiful lady later on in life.

Thank you Alfre, for such an amazing, amazing introduction and celebration of my work. And thank you very much for inviting me to be a part of such an extraordinary community.

I am surrounded by people who have inspired me, women in particular whose presence on screen made me feel a little more seen and heard and understood. That it is ESSENCE that holds this event celebrating our professional gains of the year is significant, a beauty magazine that recognizes the beauty that we not just possess but also produce.

I want to take this opportunity to talk about beauty, Black beauty, dark beauty. I received a letter from a girl and I’d like to share just a small part of it with you: “Dear Lupita,” it reads, “I think you’re really lucky to be this Black but yet this successful in Hollywood overnight. I was just about to buy Dencia’s Whitenicious cream to lighten my skin when you appeared on the world map and saved me.”

My heart bled a little when I read those words, I could never have guessed that my first job out of school would be so powerful in and of itself and that it would propel me to be such an image of hope in the same way that the women of The Color Purple were to me.

I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful. I put on the TV and only saw pale skin, I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned. The morning would come and I would be so excited about seeing my new skin that I would refuse to look down at myself until I was in front of a mirror because I wanted to see my fair face first. And every day I experienced the same disappointment of being just as dark as I was the day before. I tried to negotiate with God, I told him I would stop stealing sugar cubes at night if he gave me what I wanted, I would listen to my mother’s every word and never lose my school sweater again if he just made me a little lighter. But I guess God was unimpressed with my bargaining chips because He never listened.

And when I was a teenager my self-hate grew worse, as you can imagine happens with adolescence. My mother reminded me often that she thought that I was beautiful but that was no conservation, she’s my mother, of course she’s supposed to think I am beautiful. And then…Alek Wek. A celebrated model, she was dark as night, she was on all of the runways and in every magazine and everyone was talking about how beautiful she was. Even Oprah called her beautiful and that made it a fact. I couldn’t believe that people were embracing a woman who looked so much like me, as beautiful. My complexion had always been an obstacle to overcome and all of a sudden Oprah was telling me it wasn’t. It was perplexing and I wanted to reject it because I had begun to enjoy the seduction of inadequacy. But a flower couldn’t help but bloom inside of me, when I saw Alek I inadvertently saw a reflection of myself that I could not deny.

Now, I had a spring in my step because I felt more seen, more appreciated by the far away gatekeepers of beauty. But around me the preference for my skin prevailed, to the courters that I thought mattered I was still unbeautiful. And my mother again would say to me you can’t eat beauty, it doesn’t feed you and these words plagued and bothered me; I didn’t really understand them until finally I realized that beauty was not a thing that I could acquire or consume, it was something that I just had to be.

And what my mother meant when she said you can’t eat beauty was that you can’t rely on how you look to sustain you. What is fundamentally beautiful is compassion for yourself and for those around you. That kind of beauty enflames the heart and enchants the soul. It is what got Patsey in so much trouble with her master, but it is also what has kept her story alive to this day. We remember the beauty of her spirit even after the beauty of her body has faded away.

And so I hope that my presence on your screens and in the magazines may lead you, young girl, on a similar journey. That you will feel the validation of your external beauty but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside.

Federal Government Approves N1.6 Billion For Super Eagles For Brazil 2014

Federal Government has approved the sum of N1.6bn for Nigeria’s 2014 World Cup campaign.

Investigations reveal that the money was approved as a ‘special grant’ for the World Cup, which makes it separate from the budgetary allocation of the Nigeria Football Federation as contained in the 2014 national budget.

A breakdown of the approved sum for the Brazil 2014 campaign shows that the money will not only cover the Super Eagles participation in the finals of the FIFA competition, but will also cover their training programmes in the build-up to the event. The Super Eagles are billed to camp in the United States of America for the Mundial.

The Minister of Sports Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi told our correspondent that the government was giving the country’s participation in the World Cup the highest level of attention necessary to make the Eagles excel.

He said, “We are aware of the financial challenges of Nigerian teams while preparing for big events. It is not just about football but sports in general including the Commonwealth Games and the World Youth Olympics also coming up this year. In view of the challenges posed by the budgetary process, we had to work ahead to get funding for the teams in a way that funds will not hamper the entire plans.

“President Goodluck Jonathan has keenly followed the problems over the years and that has made it possible for us to find a solution that will be beneficial to the athletes and their aspirations and the entire country at large.”

An official of the National Sports Commission, who spoke with The Punch on the condition anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said the minister was also working to get extra funds from independent sectors to complement what the government had given.

He said, “The minister is considering leading big players in the private sector to help raise funds for the team also. The idea is to ensure that nobody has any excuse to fail. If the funds come early and sufficient, then the rest is left for the team and their managers. We have heard about poor funding as reason for not performing well in the past and that is what is being avoided now.”

Torres and Mata dropped from Spanish squad

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres and new Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata have both been left out of Vicente del Bosque’s Spain squad to face Italy in a friendly next week.

Other noticeable absentees include World Cup winners Alvaro Arbeloa, Fernando Llorente, Carles Puyol and all-time leading scorer David Villa.

The upcoming game is the last fixture scheduled before Del Bosque announces his final 23-man unit that will do battle at the World Cup later this year, yet the national coach insists there is still time for those not in his current squad to make the team for Brazil.

“There are more than two important players who are left out,” Del Bosque said.

“But this list is just for Italy. There is time in front of us, three months of competition, and many things could happen that ratify this list or make us bring others.”

Two newcomers to the Spanish set-up include Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara and in-form Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa, who has played two international games for his native Brazil before being granted Spanish citizenship last year.

“I have not spoken to [Costa] but the federation have called him to make sure he was still thinking the same,” Del Bosque said ahead of the Brazil-born striker’s first match for the current World and European champions.

“This list is not final for Brazil. It is a unique case because he [Costa] had never come with us before, and for him being born in Brazil. But he is a player who comes because of what he has done for his club. We have decided he can help us.”

The Spain boss feels the friendly against fellow European giants Italy will provide a stern test for his side.

“They [Italy] are one of the world’s big national teams,” he said. “They have Juventus as a base, and are playing very strong games, like the first game of Euro 2012, the two from the Confederations Cup, one of them agonising with extra-time when they were just as strong as we were. And the final [of Euro 2012], which was for sure our best game of recent years.”

The friendly will take place at Atletico’s Estadio Vicente Calderon in Madrid on Wednesday, 5 March.

Full Spain squad vs Italy:

A man, identified as Ogadinma Chukwu, has lost his life while having s*x with a commercial s*x worker at a popular brothel located on St. Michael’s Road, Aba, Abia State.

Sources said the deceased, whom they alleged to be a regular visitor to the brothel, died while romping the prostitute. It was gathered that immediately Chukwu slumped and died, the prostitute contacted her colleagues and the manager of the brothel who moved his corpse to a sanitary lane at the back of the brothel.

As a result of the development, shop owners around the area quickly closed business for fear of police arrest.

Those who spoke anonymously to our reporter disclosed that some staff of the brothel at about 5 p.m. brought out the corpse through their back door, dropped it at the sanitary lane and disappeared.

When our correspondent visited the area, the brothel was deserted as people were gathering at the adjoining St. Michael’s Road by York Street junction and Hospital Road.A cross section of sympathisers said the deceased might have died of a cardiac arrest or exhaustion as white foam gushed out of his mouth.

Policemen from the Aba Central Police Station, who conducted a search at the scene, recovered an ATM card, a cheque book, cash of over N200,000 and a Man O’ War Association of Nigeria identity card, bearing the name, Ogadinma Chukwu.

Contacted, the Commander, Man O’ War Association, Aba, Uche Egbuziem, identified Ogadinma Chukwu as a former member of the association, stressing that the deceased and some other members of the group still use their old identity cards.

Wole Soyinka, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Gani Fawehinmi's families reject Centenary Awards

The families of Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Gani Fawehinmi have joined the list of Nigerians who have rejected the national honours by the Federal Government and they all have cogent reasons. The award ceremony is scheduled to hold at the Banquet Hall, State House, Abuja, today February 28, 2014.

Award-winning writer, Professor Wole Soyinka's reasons might sound confusing but the most important thing to know is he rejected the honour, "I would have preferred that the entire day of infamy be ignored altogether. I'm even thinking favorably of just ignoring the obscenity, then turning up at the counter- event."

As far as the family of late Afro Beat legend and human activist, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti are concerned they are not even aware of the award. Grammy award nominee, Femi Anikulapo- Kuti who spoke to PM news stated that they will accept the award if the government first of all apologises for the murder of his grandmother and burning his father's house.

"We have not heard such but I can speak for myself, FG should first apologise for the killing of our grandmother and the burning of Kalakuta. I doubt if the family will accept the award." Femi awarded.

The family of late legal luminary Chief Gani Fawehinmi, have the "longest" reasons. In a later signed by the eldest son of the late lawyer, Mohammed Fawehinmi and addressed to the Secretary to the Federal Government of Nigeria, Anyim Pius Anyim, the family penned four strong reasons.

Dear Sir,

We acknowledge the receipt of your letter, dated February 24, 2014, which was routed through Mr Tony Akiotu, Group Managing Director, DAAR Communications, Abuja, wherein our late father, Chief Gani Fawehinmi(SAN) was chosen as one of the awardees of the Centenary celebrations of Nigeria by President Goodluck Jonathan.

We want thank the Federal Government for considering our late father for this HONOUR. However, for reasons stated here under, our family has decided it would be inexpedient to accept the award:

1. In the list of the awardees published by the Federal Government, was the name of former military dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida, who as military president, severally detained and tortured our late father. In the course of one of such illegal and inhuman detentions, our late father's cell was sprayed with toxic substances while in Gashua prison in 1987. The cumulative effect of that dastardly action led to our father, a non- smoker, contracting lung cancer which eventually led to his death on September 5, 2009. We therefore, find it morally incongruous and psychologically debilitating for our family to stand on the same podium with General Babangida to receive awards.

2. Our late father was empathetic to the sufferings of our people, particularly students. In the last 72 hours, 59 innocent students were mowed down by the blood-thirsty Boko Haram terrorists in Yobe state, while 20 other girls were similarly abducted by these same band of terrorists. These girls are still in captivity while their fate is unknown. If our late father were to be alive, would he be wining and dining with all the glitterati at a Centenary celebration under these circumstances? Certainly no.

3. In the past few weeks, the polity has been assaulted with putrid odour of corruption with the alleged $20 billion missing in NNPC, a development that became the Archilles heel of Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the suspended Governor of Central Bank. As an anti-corruption activist, if he were to be alive, our late father would have confronted the issue head-long and possibly gone to court. With the issue still raging, would our late father have accepted this award at this critical moment? Certainly no.

4. Our late father was unrepentantly for the UNITY of Nigeria. However, with the level of profligacy in some of the events celebrating NIGERIA'S Centenary, our late father would have preferred these multi- million Naira expenditures channeled to our decrepit Teaching hospitals, than unproductive razzmatazz that do not improve the socio-Economic well being of our people.

Sir, for these reasons, our family respectfully declines to receive the award about to be conferred on our late father by the government. Please, accept the assurances of our highest consideration.

Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria.
(For and on behalf of late Gani Fawehinmi family)

Governor Fashola renames hall to honour slain Yobe students

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday Thursday February 27th renamed a hall initially named after him, to “Peace Hall’’, in memory of slain Yobe school children.

Vanguard reports that the hall was constructed by the Lagos Zonal Council of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), located at Fadeyi in Lagos.

Fashola said at the inauguration of the hall earlier named after him by NUPENG that he changed the name to honour the slain secondary school students.

"I appreciate NUPENG’s gesture but I will rename this edifice `Peace Hall`, in memory of the lives of the children that were brutally slain in Yobe by insurgents.

The Children will soon be forgotten but as a reminder to us and the need to stand up for what is right, I ask that the hall be re-named as NUPENG’s Peace Hall, as we all search for peace across Nigeria. While we pray for the repose of the souls of these young ones, it is also a moment we must stand up as a nation.

Whatever language you speak, whatever faith you practise, whatever ethnic/tribe you claim, this is the time it will not show. No matter how diverse we are, we are still one people, this is a time when colours and flag do not matter and political ideologies mean nothing. This is the time we must show and respect the values of the lives of fellow Nigerians’’ The governor said.
