 Pope Francis, who is currently on a state visit to Turkey, joined Muslim faithfuls in Istanbul to pray at the Grand Mufti of Istanbul, Istanbul Blue Mosque yesterday.

The Pope stood with his head bowed and hands clasped in front of him in 2-minutes of silent prayer inside the 17th-century Sultan Ahmet mosque, aiming to show respect for Islam and encourage stronger ties between the two faiths.

Governor Amaechi 'Tipped' To Manage Buhari's Presidential Campaign

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State is likely to emerge as the director general of Muhammad Buhari’s presidential campaign if the former military head of state is selected as the presidential flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on December 8th.

Two top sources within the party disclosed the plans to a correspondent of SaharaReporters in an interview focusing on the APC’s strategy for the February 2015 elections.

The sources said Mr. Buhari’s inner circle tipped Mr. Amaechi for the position of campaign overseer shortly after the party hierarchy reportedly agreed to zone the vice presidential slot to the southwest zone of the country. “The party decided to zone the VP position to the southwest in view of the zone’s crucial importance in the plan to win the 2015 elections convincingly,” one source said.

A former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Rafiu Jafojo, and some other chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos on Saturday defected to the All Progressives Congress.

Others who defected included former Lagos State Chairman, Elders Council of PDP, Dr. Oluyomi Finnih, and former state secretary of the party, Tunde Daramola.

The declaration of the new members was held at the APC secretariat on Acme Road, Lagos.

The father of a 14-year-old child bride who allegedly murdered her husband said Thursday he was appealing to a Nigerian court to spare his daughter from being sent to the gallows.

Wasilat Tasi'u is on trial for the murder of her 35-year-old husband, Umar Sani, who died after eating food that Tasi'u allegedly laced with rat poison.
"We are appealing to the judge to consider Wasilat's plea," her father, Isyaku Tasi'u, told The Associated Press on Thursday.

On Wednesday witnesses told the High Court in Gezawa, a town 60 miles outside Nigeria's second largest city of Kano, that Tasi'u killed her husband two weeks after their wedding in April. Three others allegedly died after eating the poisoned meal.

Boko Haram : America Is not Nigeria's friend - Gowon

A former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has taken a swipe at the United States on its refusal to sell arms to Nigeria to fight the insurgency by the Islamic group, Boko Haram.

Gowon, in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, criticised the US for not selling military hardware to Nigeria, saying if the US was truly a diplomatic friend to Nigeria, it should do everything possible to keep the corporate existence of Nigeria.

This, according to him, includes assisting Nigeria to fight aggression from any quarter.

He recalled seeing three of them, adding that while two sat at the back of the vehicle, only one was seat­ed at the front.

I will defeat Buhari for APC’s ticket - Atiku

Former Vice President, Alhaji Abubarkar Atiku has said he will defeat other aspirants, including General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), jostling for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket to contest next year’s Presidential election.

Atiku, who was in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Saturday to meet with party leaders and delegates of the party, said the reception he had received since he has been moving around the country wooing delegates showed he was the candidate to beat and would indeed clinch the party’s ticket.

The middle aged man claims his Accra-based church refused to assist him, in a period during which he faced extreme financial difficulties.

The disappointed man insists that his contributions to the church, which cover a period of fifteen (15) years, should have afforded him some reprieve in his time of trouble.

11 passengers, including a mother and her two female children,died in Abak local government area of Akwa Ibom State when a bus conveying passengers from Port Harcourt to Uyo, plunged in river near the Nigerian Army Barracks, Ibagwa.

All, except two of the occupants drowned.It was gathered that the Toyota Hiace bus belonging to To & Fro Transport Company was hit by a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) making it to plunged into the river.

According to The Nation 
The SUV was on top speed and its driver was apparently trying to avoid a bad spot leading to its collision with the bus.

Former Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak has been cleared of charges of corruption and killing of hundreds of Egyptian protesters in a revolution that toppled him in 2011.

Mubarak ruled Egypt for 29 years. The 86-year-old Mubarak was convicted in 2012 of issuing orders to kill peaceful protesters during the country's 2011 uprising and was sentenced to life in prison. He appealed and was granted a new trial last year.

Six charged over $1.28 billion drug bust in Australia print

Six men have been charged over what Australian police said Saturday was one of the largest drug busts in the country’s history, worth up to Aus$1.5 billion (US$1.28 billion).

Australian Federal Police said the men were charged over their involvement in the attempted importation of almost three tonnes of MDMA and crystal methamphetamine, also known as ice, into Sydney.

Police will allege that the drugs, detected by Customs officers, were hidden in a container shipped from Germany which had been filled with furniture and unmarked boxes.

The names of the number one citizen of Lagos state, Governor Babatunde Fashola and that of his wife, Abimbola and all residents who registered at the governor’s polling unit were missing on the register of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and could not collect their Permanent Voters Card, PVC.

The governor, who after arriving at his Ward G3, polling Unit E002, State Junior Secondary School, Surulere, where he had registered with his wife, Dame Abimbola in 2010, did not sight any INEC official at the scene at about 2:00 p.m.

The governor, after waiting at the scene for a long time sighted a notice pasted on the entrance of the school, advising residents who had registered at the polling unit to revisit the unit next month for another registration exercise.

China surpasses Japan as world's second-largest stock market

China has overtaken Japan as the world's second-largest stock market for the first time in three years, Japan Times reported. 

This result has emerged on the back of increased investor confidence about the prospects of China's economy, which is likely to be revived as monetary stimulus measures are being pumped up. 

Both Japan and China have been increasing economic stimulus efforts this year, with the yen weakening 10 percent against the dollar.

In 2010, China overtook Japan as the world's second-largest economy. Its GDP last year was valued at USD9.2 trillion last year, which is about 89 percent more than Japan. Currently, the USA takes the top spot among rankings of world stock markets.

There was unrest on the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun State, southwest Nigeria, on Friday, 28 November, 2014 as students of the institution hauled stones and sticks at President Goodluck Jonathan during his visit to the campus.

President Jonathan, notable traditional rulers in the southwest and politicians had attended the Yoruba Unity Summit organised by the Committee on Yoruba Progress, southwest geo-political zone of the country where the president was endorsed for his re-election in the 2015 general election.

But the placard-wielding students of the institution who had converged at the Oduduwa Hall, venue of the conference to protest what they termed “rot in the educational sector” booed and stoned President Jonathan while entering the presidential chopper few minutes after the summit.

They did not apologise for keeping everyone.’Once Kanye took his seat in first class, he reportedly refused to pose for a photo with a European couple who recognised him.

A presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), on Wednesday said the ruling Peoples Democratic Party would destroy the country if they are not stopped in the 2015 election.

Buhari said this while addressing party delegates in Calabar, Cross River State, that will vote in the APC presidential primaries slated for December 10.

He said the country has lost so much in the last 15 years that the PDP had been in power.

A suspected armed robber arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, Felix Odion, has said he never missed a church service despite the fact that he robbed for a living.

Odion, was arrested for snatching cars along with his partner, Titus Anthony, on November 22 from a hideout in Ifo, Ogun State, told our correspondent that he was lured into joining a robbery gang and insisted that he was a committed church member.

Speaking with Punch Metro, 23-year-old Odion, said he was given N70,000 from the first robbery operation, adding that he had gone out with the gang only on two occasions.

At least 64 dead, 126 injured in Kano central mosque bombings

A double bombing during Friday prayers at one of Nigeria‘s most prominent mosques killed at least 64 people and injured another 126, a rescue official said.

The official, who requested anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to media, said 64 bodies had been brought to just one Kano area hospital after the attack at the city’s central mosque, and the wounded figure reflected statistics from three hospitals.

“Those figures are going to climb,” he told  said. (AFP)

Fashola writes President Jonathan over federal task force activities

LAGOS—Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has written to President Goodluck Jonathan over the legality of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme and Federal Road Maintenance Agency, SURE-P/FERMA task force and for occupying the old toll gate axis of the state without observing due process.

Fashola disclosed this yesterday while addressing police officers, businessmen and others, at the Eight Town Hall meeting on security, themed, “Maintaining our collective resolve in fighting crime,” held at the City Hall, Lagos Island axis of the state.

The new development came after barrage of attacks from the state government and the All Progressives Congress, APC on the SURE-P/FERMA task force, which was expected to commence operation before the end of this year, 2014.

American wife to get $530million in Britain's biggest divorce payout

A judge in a London High Court ruled that the American wife of a British Tycoon be given $530million in a divorce payout. This is considered to be the biggest divorce settlement so far in British history. 

The judge awarded Jamie Cooper-Hohn $493 million in cash and the rest in the form of a property in Connecticut and adjustments to her share of a pension.

A full judgment will be published in December, but the figures were cited during a court hearing yesterday November 27.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on  Friday 28, 2014, secured the conviction of a top prison officer as Justice J.J Majebi of the Kogi State High Court, Okene, convicted and sentenced Joseph Friday Idachaba, Deputy Controller of Prisons, to 7 years imprisonment for offences bordering on obtaining money by false pretense. 

The convict is to pay the sum of N1, 403,114.09 in restitution to Nigeria Prison Service.

Arraigned in 2012 on a three-count charge, the convict was found guilty on count three of the charge by the trial judge, who, however, acquitted him on two remaining counts.

63 Senators Move To Impeach President Jonathan

63 senators as of Thursday have signed up to the plan to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan in the upper legislative chamber.

One of the arrowheads of the move to remove Jonathan in the Senate showed Punch correspondent the list containing the signatures of the senators.

The source said eight Peoples Democratic Party senators were among the signatories to the planned impeachment notice.

There are 109 members in the Senate.

Boko Haram Militants Kill 10 Soldiers, 35 Hunters In Roadside Bombing Near Mubi

Boko Haram militants today detonated a roadside bomb after ambushing a combination of soldiers and hunters in Mararaba near Mubi in Adamawa state.

At least 10 soldiers and 35 hunters were killed in the ambush that happened around 6PM Nigerian time according eyewitnesses and military sources.

A Nigerian army source said they could not immediately comment on the level of casualty but stated they were aware of the attack and still investigating.

National Assembly drama : Senate sets up panel to probe IG of Police

The Senate has set up a committee to probe IGP Abba and other policemen involved in the siege.

A seven-member committee has been set up to probe the action of the police on that day and the committee have been given seven days to have those behind it brought to book.

Members of the panel include Senator Ahmed Makarfi, who will act as chairman, Abubakar Bagudu, Victor Lar, Adegbenga Kaka, Paulinus Igwe Nwagu, Mohammed Jibrilla Bindowo, and Ehigie Uzamere.

Ex Chelsea manager, Avram Grant has been appointed the new coach of Ghana national team.

President, Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwesi Nyantakyi announced the 59 year-old's  appointment in a press conference held today. "All outstanding issues with Mr. Grant have been cleared and we believe he is the right man for the job." He stated.

He continued, " We can't ask him to win the Nations Cup, that will be unrealistic...His target is to do well at the 2015 Nations Cup and win the 2017 Nations Cup."

Xiong Shuihua was born in Xiongkeng village in the city of Xinyu, southern China and said that his family had always been well looked after and supported by residents in his childhood.

The 54-year-old decided to repay the favour - for free.

A10-year-old boy, Usen Okon, who was thrown into the Imo River in the Ikot Abasi area of Akwa Ibom State, over witchcraft accusation, has survived the ordeal.

The Senior Project Manager of the Humanist Association for Peace and Social Tolerance Advancement, Mr.Ayobami Ojedokun, told Punch  in Uyo on Tuesday that Okon was under the care of his paternal aunt, identified simply as Ekaeyen, at Etebi community in the Esit Eket Local Government Area of the state as his parents had died.
