Kevin Prince Boateng Reveals What Transpired In Ghanian Camp

Kevin-Prince Boateng has accused the Ghana Football Association of breaking promises it made to persuade him to return to international football.

Kevin-Prince Boateng has hit back at the Ghana Football Association after being sent home early from the World Cup, describing the Black Stars’ organisation during the tournament in Brazil as “amateurish”.

The Schalke midfielder and team-mate Sulley Muntari were expelled from the Ghana squad on the day of their final match against Portugal after Boateng was accused of making “vulgar verbal insults” towards coach James Appiah. Muntari was also accused of an “unprovoked physical attack” on a member of the Ghana FA, with both players asked to leave the camp before the 2-1 defeat to Portugal in Brasília which consigned them to bottom spot in Group G.

Boateng – who only returned to the Black Stars’ set-up last year having retired from international football after the last World Cup – is now back at his home in Germany. In an interview with newspaper Bild published on Sunday, he accuses the GFA of having failed to live up to promises it made to him before the tournament.

“Everything – the hotels, the flights – everything was amateurish,” he said.

“The GFA president visited me in Milan begging me to play for Ghana again. He gave me his word that we would have better travel, better organisation and preparation. He has not kept his word. In the end I was just still dissatisfied.

“It was a nightmare from the first day of the preparation to the end,” Boateng added. “We flew to the first training camp from Amsterdam to Miami. However, we travelled in two groups, since there was no space.

One group flew through Atlanta, the other New York. We sat for around nine hours at the airport - a total of 19 hours on the road.

“The flight from Miami to Brazil a week later took 12 hours and we sat and concentrated in economy class. The legs ached. It sounds strange for an average citizen, but for a competitive athlete that is a disgrace.

The Ghana FA president sat in business class with his wife and two children. And then in Brazil, we finally had a charter flight but my luggage was lost. Two days without football boots – it was a disaster.”

Appiah was the first homegrown coach to lead Ghana to a World Cup. But asked his opinion on whether he had a clue about tactics, Boateng gave a less than ringing endorsement. “No. But I have respect for him [as a] person,” he said. “I have always behaved positively. But if someone asks me about him, whether he is a good coach, I’d say no.”

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama spoke with captain Asamoah Gyan on the telephone to resolve a dispute over player bonuses ahead of the Portugal match, with $3m in cash flown to Brazil on a private jet. However, Boateng claimed that was only the tip of the iceberg in terms of issues that dogged the squad.

He said: “That was the smallest problem. Everything had accumulated over a month. It was pure disaster. Poor training conditions and sleep options, I just wonder where all the money was flowing too.

“The association get so much money from sponsors and Fifa - it was certainly not used for hotels, flights, the team and the preparation.”

Boateng also insisted that there was a lack of team spirit among the squad in direct contrast to the last World Cup in South Africa, when Ghana came within a missed penalty of becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-final.

“We were not a real team. Everyone was busy with themselves,” he said.

“There were two or three players who were just glad Sulley Muntari and I were suspended. They said it to my face. We all know that I have never insulted the coach. Nevertheless, they have turned the manager against Sulley and me. I am very calm and relaxed, because I definitely know that I did no such thing.

“I have represented my opinion. There was no player who was happy. We had 100 meetings with the delegation. We told them that we need tens of change things. because of this I am an easy victim.”

Nigeria Vs France : Guru Maharaji Predicts Victory For Super Eagles

Guru Maharaji
Sat Guru Maharaj Ji, the Head of the One Love Family” Ibadan, on Sunday predicted victory for the Super Eagles ahead of their clash with the Blues of France in the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

His prediction is contained in a statement signed by Wole Oladapo, the Minister for Media Links of the One Love Family.

The Super Eagles are billed to take on their French counterparts on Monday in the Round of 16 of at the Mundial.

Victory for the Eagles in the match will qualify them for their first quarter-final berth, while a defeat will see them knocked out of the tournament.

He reminded the Nigerian Football Association, Super Eagles Supporters Club, players and coaching crew to be obedient to his earlier divine injunctions, such as avoiding the colour Blue and abstaining from sex, smoking and drinking.

This is, however, the time for the whole world to know and realise the fact that Nigeria is where the light of the world resides. Victory is for Africa,’’ the statement said.

It said predicted a win during the Nigeria versus Bosnia match, an encounter that largely contributed to Nigeria’s qualification for the Round of 16.

President Goodluck Jonathan gives Nigeria's Super Eagles extra motivation

super eagles
President Goodluck Jonathan has given the Super Eagles extra motivation to beat France today after clearing all their outstanding appearance fees.

The players were informed that all their entitlements have been ordered and cleared by Sports Minister, Hon Tammy Danagogo.

The President also promised to clear any outstanding that the team may incur in the course of the championship, including outstanding Fifa grants to the NFF, which will be off-set later by the soccer ruling house.

This declaration was made by the Minister while addressing players and officials of the national team at their Brasilia Palace Hotel camp in the Brazilian capital.

The minister who spoke on behalf of the President reminded the players that Nigerians from all works of life have implicit confidence in the abilities of the team to excel at the ongoing World Cup.

The Minister also announced that Nigerian business mogul, Dr Mike Adenuga Jnr, has sent through him the sum of $250,000 to boost the team ahead of their clash against France on Monday.

"He said this is a token and if the team goes ahead and shock the world he will join Mr President to shock the team” he declared amidst thunderous ovation from the players and their officials.

NFF President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, said the country was very lucky to have a President like Goodluck Jonathan , who takes personal interest in the activities of the national team, assuring the President that the team will not let the nation down at this crucial point.

Team Skipper, Joseph Yobo and Head Coach Stephen Keshi also spoke in similar vein.

Fifa won't honour Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo's 100th cap

yobo
World football –governing body, Fifa, has turned down a request by the Nigeria Football Federation to honour Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo on his 100th cap–day against France in Brasilia.

Should he be picked for the match by Coach Stephen Keshi, it would be Yobo’s one hundredth senior cap for Nigeria, since he featured against Zambia in Chingola in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match that ended 1-1 on 24th March, 2001.

A request was made by the NFF to present a signed official jersey to the 33 –year old defender prior to kick –off inside the Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha, but Fifa insisted it could not go ahead.

NFF chiefs have decided to have a brief presentation of the jersey to the player by NFF President Aminu Maigari, at the team’s Brasilia Palace Hotel after the match.

Yobo, who started his career as a striker and also featured for Nigeria at U-20 level, playing at the 1999 Fifa U-20 World Cup that Nigeria hosted, has scored seven goals in his previous 99 senior matches.

During this period, he has also won Africa Cup of Nations gold (2013) and bronze medals (2002, 2004, 2006 and 2010) and played in three Fifa World Cup finals (2002, 2010 and 2014).

If he features against France, he would be playing in his 10th Fifa World Cup match, more than Jay Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu – the only other Nigerian players to have featured in three Fifa World Cup finals.

Robben apologises for diving against Mexico

Robben
The Bayern Munich winger won a spot-kick in injury time to enable Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to score the winner but admitted going to ground too easily earlier in the match

Arjen Robben has apologised for diving during Netherland's dramatic comeback victory over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16 at Arena Castelao on Sunday.

Robben tormented the Mexican defence on numerous occasions with his pace, skill and direct running, and had several penalty appeals turned down before finally winning a spot-kick in the second minute of injury time when he went down under a challenge from Rafael Marquez.

Substitute Klaas-Jan Huntelaar converted from 12 yards to send the Oranje into the last eight of the tournament, after Giovani dos Santos' opener had been cancelled out by a late Wesley Sneijder equaliser.

After the match Robben insisted the incident which won the game was a justified penalty, but admitted going to ground far too easily on one occasion in the first half.

"I have to be honest and must apologise," he told NOS. "One of the moments in the first half was a dive. Sometimes you get kicked, but that was not the case at that particular moment. I shouldn't have done that and I'm really upset with myself about it. It was a silly action.

"The other one inthe first half was a clear penalty. If that's not a spot-kick, then what is...

"The one at the end was a just penalty call as well."

Robben also revealed why he entrusted Huntelaar with the responsibility of the penalty rather than taking it himself.

"Usually I am comfortable with taking a penalty, but this time I was the one who was tackled," he explained. "I felt comfortable that Huntelaar would capitalise.

"It was his moment, he deserved this. I'm almost crying from the emotions. The feeling is so strong, we want to win this, to fight together. These youngsters ... I am so proud."

Watch Live : Nigeria Vs France On Monday At 5pm

france vs nigeria
Overview Match number 53 is the fifth match of the knock- out stages. France won 2 matches and drew 1 to collect 7 points to finish on top of Group E. Nigeria, on the other hand, won 1 match and drew 1 to collect 4 points to finish second in Group F.

France: France's performance in group stages was quite impressive. This is especially significant because there were several big European teams which failed to perform well in the tournament. Spain, Italy, England and Croatia failed to qualify for the "Round of 16" while France, which had a poor run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, has been brilliant. France scored 8 goals in its first 2 matches. Karim Benzema has been playing well, scoring 3 goals in the first two matches.

The third match, however, was a striking contrast of its first two matches. The match against Ecuador ended in a goalless draw even though France had numerous opportunities to score.

There could have been 8-9 goals in the second half itself but there seemed to be a strange French inability to score. As we go to the knock-out stage, France needs to get back to its goal scoring approach.

Nigeria: Nigeria won against Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0 and had a goalless draw against Iran to collect 4 points. However, its best performance came against Argentina even though it lost it 2-3.

Historically, the African team has an uncanny tendency of being in Argentina's group. Its best performance often comes against the South American team.

Nigeria played excellent football and scored goals soon after Argentina did. Vincent Enyeama, the Nigerian goalkeeper who was the man of the match in 2010 world cup match against Argentina, played brilliantly again and denied several goals. Ahmed Musa was fabulous in scoring two brilliant goals to match Lionel Messi.

Nigeria has all the fire power to match France if it manages to stay organised. Head to Head These two teams played only once times against each other before. Nigeria scored 1 goal to win the match. Key Players France: Karim Benzema and Moussa Sissoko Nigeria: Vincent Enyeama and Ahmed Musa Date,

Time: 5:00 PM

The match will be held at Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha in Brasília.

"So what if I sell seex toys? Nigerians are a bunch of hypocrites" - Bisi Ibidapo-Obe

Bisi Ibidapo-Obe
After opening her shop and posing with se8x toys..Yoruba actress,Bisi Ibidapo-Obe raised eyebrows when she vehemently denied selling s*ex toys..

In a new interview with the Sun, she blasts Nigerian's for being hypocrites
"I did not open a s*ex toyshop. I sell men and women under wears and a few other things. I also have a section for body massage, body polish and other things that are related to that. On the issue of s*ex toys, I have this to say, if I sell se*x toys so what? Nigerians are a bunch of hypocrites. They make issues out of non-issues. When I travelled to London I saw some newly wedded couples buying s*ex toys but back here, Nigerians believe that those that buy se*x toys are harlots. In fact, there is dignity in the use of se*x toys.I am not into the sales of only s*ex toys but there is a big market for them."

Boateng has played his last game for Ghana – Schalke manager, Heldt

Kevin-Prince Boateng
Schalke general manager Horst Heldt believes Kevin-Prince Boateng will never play for Ghana again.

The midfielder was sent home from the World Cup before his team’s final group match against Portugal along with Sulley Muntari for allegedly insulting coach Kwesi Appiah – a claim he denies.

And although Appiah has said the midfielder could return to the national team in the future, Heldt feels that Boateng has played his last game for Ghana as a result of the incident.

“We have seen at Schalke that he is as an absolute team player,” he told Bild. ”I can’t imagine that he will run out for Ghana again.

“I am sure that this World Cup and the suspension will not burden him. Quite the contrary, anyone who knows Boateng knows that all this will motivate him more.”

Ghana tumbled out of the World Cup prior to the knockout stages after losing to the USA and Portugal, despite a thrilling 2-2 draw with eventual group winners Germany.

President Goodluck Jonathan to watch Nigeria Super Eagles in quarter-final

Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan will travel to Brazil to watch the Super Eagles if they make it to the quarter-finals.

Nigeria have to get past France to reach that stage, but captain Joseph Yobo says with the additional incentive from the president, the players will be even more motivated to reach that historic landmark.

"He assured us when he called that he's behind us and if we beat France and qualify for the quarter-final, he will come and visit us and watch the next game," Yobo told Ajetun Blog.

"That's a very big motivation for us to know that the president will come and visit us. It's better than money and we are determined to go there and fight and give our best.

"It's a morale booster."

The game kicks off at 1pm local time (5pm Nigeria time) in Brasilia on Monday.

Nigerian Military Bars 278 Muslim Pilgrims, Senator Ndume From Flying Out Of Maiduguri

Add caption
There was tension twice yesterday at the Maiduguri airport in Borno State as the Nigerian military barred 278 Islamic pilgrims headed for the Umrah pilgrimage from boarding a flight. In a separate development, the military also stopped Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume from taking a flight out of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

Our correspondent gathered that the military prohibited the senator and other pilgrims from boarding the chartered aircraft and forced both flights to take off from the Maiduguri airport with empty seats.
One of the frustrated pilgrims told our correspondent that he and the others intended to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform the Umrah. Another source disclosed that Governor Kashim Shettima had intervened to enable the pilgrims to fly, but his efforts yielded no results.

“There was raised tension at the airport,” one of the sources said.

Skynet International Limited, a hajj and Umrah operator, had chartered an airline to convey the pilgrims to their destination. But as the 278 pilgrims, who had undergone security checks, waited to board the plane, the military issued what one source described as “a strange orders” directing the plane to take off empty. The military then directed the pilgrims to travel five hours by road to the Kano airport through the often-unsafe Maiduguri-Damaturu-Potiskum Road.

Military officials at the airport cited orders from the chief of air staff to immediately close the Maiduguri airport to commercial aircraft. The military said the action was for security reasons. Its officials ignored explanations by officials of Borno State Government, including Governor Shettima, that it was risky for the pilgrims to travel by road to Kano, especially given past instances of attacks along the route.

The military also waved off explanations by the management of Skynet, which chartered the airline, that it had written to Nigeria’s aviation officials as well as military and other security authorities about its flight arrangements, and had received proper authorization. The firm also reportedly reminded the military officials that the firm’s previous operations went hitch-free, even in 2011, 2012 and 2013 when Boko Haram insurgency in Maiduguri was intense. “In past years, our flights landed and took off to Saudi Arabia hitch-free,” a company representative told our correspondent.

As tension rose, Governor Shettima sent the secretary to the state government, Baba Ahmed Jidda, to address the pilgrims and calm them down. Afterwards, the pilgrims left in numerous buses driving through the night in order not to miss the inaugural from Kano to Saudi Arabia.

A Borno State government official said he was perturbed that the military might be playing a script to frustrate the Borno pilgrims because the opposition APC controls the state.

The dust had hardly settled down when the military also barred Senator Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, from boarding an aircraft chartered by the Borno State government. The 8-seater aircraft had arrived in Maiduguri with some state government officials from Abuja.‎ It was supposed to take off to Abuja with eight passengers, including the senator and a member of the House of Representatives. “The military ordered the plane to take off empty, leaving behind all eight persons, including the two lawmakers who were scheduled ‎to board the flight to Abuja.

A few months ago, the ‎Maiduguri airport was reopened by the Nigerian Air Space Management Agency after the airport’s temporary closure following an attack by insurgents on an air force base near the airport. Following an appeal by NAMA, the Borno State government had donated a high-powered electricity generator as well as other equipment that were installed in January to make the resumption of flights possible.

Since January, flights have been landing and taking off from the Maiduguri airport without any incident, leading a source to question the military’s actions yesterday.

Below is an update on the story from Punch

Woman who stole co-tenant’s child is a ‘prayer warrior’ –Neighbours of kidnap suspect

Rosemary Chukwu is a member of the ritualist church that kidnapped a neigbour's 6 year old child and locked him in her toilet.

Rosemary Chukwu had become a sort of nuisance to her neighbours. Many times, they had complained about her praying habit.

“She would shout and scream and make noise while praying. She makes everybody uncomfortable. That is what everybody knows about her here. This is why we are still in shock about what she did,” said one of her neighbours at 33, Omo Ologede area in Majidun, Lagos.

But what Chukwu is currently embroiled in is simply shocking for the neighbours.

The woman allegedly stole the seven-year-old child of her neighbour, Mrs. Gloria Emeka. In fact, our correspondent learnt from neighbours who caught her in the act that the timely intervention of security agents saved her from being lynched.

When our correspondent visited Omo Ologede on Wednesday, it was noticed that Chukwu and parents of the kidnapped child were co-tenants.

Another neighbour in the same compound, Biola Odunsin, narrated how he, in conjunction with other neighbours, caught Chukwu.

He said, “It was around 6.30am today (Wednesday), when the mother of the child raised the alarm that she could not find her son, Emmanuel.

“We all rallied around her to find out what happened. She informed us that she had sent him to fetch water from the well in the compound. She raised the alarm because her son took too long and when she went to the well, she only saw the empty bucket the boy took there.

“While we were looking for the child, Rosemary (Chukwu) even came out to join in searching for the child as well. She was pitying her mother, showing concern and asking us to check some other parts of the compound.”

One of the neighbours who also took part in the search for the child, told Saturday PUNCH that Chukwu even asked him to see whether the child was in another compound not far from the house.

Two other neighbours named Yakubu and Vincent told our correspondent that they entered the well where the child was sent to fetch water.

“We entered the well to see if the boy fell inside but we found nothing,” they said.

But while the search for the child was going on, Chukwu was said to have gone inside her apartment and came out with a large luggage.

“She carried the luggage on her head and passed by us as we searched for the child. She said she needed to drop the bag somewhere and that she would come to join the search later,” Odunsin said.

But a suspicious woman, the wife of the landlord of the house, alerted the search party, telling them to search the bag Chukwu had on her head before she was allowed to leave.

When the residents called after her to tell her to bring the bag for a check, she reportedly began to run. But a moment later, she was caught.

“We immediately opened the bag and inside was Emmanuel with a cloth used to gag him. The child would have died because he could not speak again. We tried hard before we could resuscitate him,” Odunsi explained.

However, the infuriated neighbours descended on Chukwu and while they were beating her, she screamed out that they should spare her because she was only a messenger.

“Pastor Ernest sent me! Please don’t kill me, Pastor Ernest sent me o!” she was reported to have told the party of residents.

Then Chukwu took the party to the church of the pastor who she claimed sent her, which turned out to be Pastor Ernest Nwankwo of the Holy Family Happy Family Ministry (House of Mercy), Majidun.

One of the residents who took Chukwu to the church said by the time they got there, the pastor was nowhere to be found. She was later handed over to the police who took her away.

A photograph of Chukwu obtained by our correspondent showed a plump, fair complexioned woman with a motherly face. She is said to have four children – two boys and two girls.

Neighbours said they had not seen her husband, as he was usually away from home even though they are still together.

When our correspondent visited the church on Wednesday, a crowd of residents had besieged the place, barely kept at bay by some sternly looking policemen who were said to have prevented the church from being burnt down earlier by angry residents.

Despite this, some youths had succeeded in entering the church before the police came and seized hundreds of audio CDs of an album recorded by the pastor.

The youths publicly and excitedly sold the CDs on the Ikorodu Road to motorists and passers-by for N50 each.

The policemen rebuffed every attempt to gain access to the empty church, while residents of houses nearby could not provide any information about the whereabouts of the pastor.

Some residents who pleaded anonymity informed Saturday PUNCH that the church was not a conventional one.

“They don’t hold service on Sundays, only on Tuesday and Thursday. The pastor claims to treat mad men,” one of them told our correspondent.

An eyewitness, who entered the church before police intervention, said when they stormed the church earlier, they met a man with his hands and legs shackled in chains.

“I am not a mad man. Please help me! I was taken from around Redeemed Church Camp on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Pastor Ernest kept me here. There were many of us but they usually come to take away,” the man, who gave his name as Onuora Okeke, was reported to have said. The man also revealed to the people that he was from Anambra State and had been locked up in the church since 2012. Our correspondent learnt the man was taken away by the police.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said the Chukwu would soon be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba for investigation.

She also confirmed that the pastor of the church has not been found.

N20million controversy : Charly Boy disgraces Governor Okorocha at Oputa’s burial

Charly Boy disgraces Governor Okorocha at Oputa’s burial
Arequiem mass organised for the late Socrates of the Supreme Court, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa at his country home in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State was disrupted yesterday, when the first son of the former erudite judge, Charles Oputa, a.k.a Charley Boy prevented Governor Rochas Okorocha from paying tribute to his father.

Eye witnesses said that the mass which was conducted by the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Rt Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oguta, went on smoothly until Okorocha was permitted by the Bishop to pay his tribute to the fallen judge.

However, Chief Okorocha, was stopped midway into his speech, by Charley Boy who was visibly infruiated with Kukah for granting the governor the permission to speak. He walked up angrily to the altar and snatched the micro-phone from the governor, to the embarrassment of all the dignitaries present. It was a disgrace to the governor.

Among eminent Nigerians present at the church service included representative of President Goodluck Jonathan, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Governors Willie Obiano (Anambra), Theodore Orji (Abia); the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha and former governors of Anambra State, Senator Chris Ngige and Mr Peter Obi respectively.

Also present, were the former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim,, Senator Uche Chukwumerije and the Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu, the state Police Commsiioner, Almajid Ali and the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, for Oguta, Ikembuchukwu Abugu.

The intervention of Bishop Kukah could not assuage Charly Boy’s anger as he insisted that no politician would take advantage of his father’s burial to score “cheap political” goals. He insisted that the Governor should not speak at the event.

However, obviously embarrassed by Charley Boy’s action, the Governor and members his entourage hurriedly left the church service mid -way, despite entreaties from the officiating Bishop Kuka for them to stay on.

It was gathered that Charly Boy’s action followed a recent statement by Government House, Owerri, to the effect that the Oputa family was given N20 million to assist it in the burial arrangements.

Sources told Saturday Vanguard, however, that “the family never received a dime from either Okorocha or the state government, not to talk of the alleged N20 million said to have been made available to them,’’ as reported by a section of the media.

Earlier in his sermon, Bishop who lauded the virtues of Justice Oputa, stressed that “to tolerate a son like Charley Boy by a man of late Justice Oputa’s reputation, is a measure of the greatness of the man.”

He called on Nigerians to stand up in defence of justice and equity, adding that late Oputa had serious liking for the concept of justice and equity during his life time.

”Oputa before he died, was worried about the quality of Nigerian lawyers and judges because he believed in the judiciary as the last hope of the nation. Today, his legacies are beyond his immediate family,” Bishop Kuka said

Meanwhile, the state government has described the incident that played out at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oguta, as “ugly and regrettable.”

According to a statement by the Seniour Special Assistant, SSA, Media, to Governor Okorocha, Mr Sam Onwuemodo, “It is highly regrettable that the son of the late Justice, Mr Charles Emeka Oputa, aka, Charly Boy, threw caution to the wind and turned the church service into a political theatre that saw him acting or playing out the script he drafted in Abuja with some Imo politicians, who have remained cowed by the overwhelming popularity of Governor Rochas Okorocha.”

Onwuemeodo insisted that the state government made “substantial financial input and also organized a special day of tributes for the late Justice Oputa at the expense of state government with Charly Boy also present with other members of the family.

”We condemn that ugly incident and also wish to advise politicians from the state to stop heating up the polity over power since God is the giver of power. In 2015, God will decide who will be governor of Imo State and when God decides that, there is nothing anybody can do about it.” He did not make to reference to the N20m said to have been given to the family.

Photos : Muslim man murders pregnant prostitute because she was working near a mosque

Farooq Shah, above, plunged a knife into Mariana Popa, below, while riding his bicycle along a stretch of road notorious for seex workers
A Muslim who stabbed a pregnant Romanian prostitute to death after warning her not to work near a mosque was jailed for at least 29 years today.

Farooq Shah, 21, plunged a knife into Mariana Popa’s chest while riding his bicycle along a stretch of road notorious for sex workers.

Miss Popa, 24, had been in Britain for just three weeks and was trying to earn the money to support her family when she was stabbed in Ilford, Essex.

She staggered into Chicken & Pizza 4U in Ilford Lane and collapsed in a pool of blood as her killer rode away on his bike.

Mariana Popa
The mother-of-one was six weeks pregnant with her second child when she bled to death.

CCTV footage showed Shah waiting on the forecourt of a BP garage close to where prostitutes were working on Ilford Lane late on October 28.

Miss Popa could then be seen to walk towards him and speak to him before he stabbed her twice in the chest.

Prosecutors believe Shah was warning Miss Popa to leave the area - and she paid with her life when she refused.

Shah’s distinctive appearance exactly matched that of the killer - but he claimed he was the victim of mistaken identity.

He was found with another stolen mobile when he was arrested for the murder of Miss Popa.

Shah claimed he was at home watching an episode of Family Guy at the time of the killing after returning from a party in Plaistow drunk and high from smoking cannabis.

CCTV images shown in court captured the moment Mariana Popa was confronted by Farooq Shah near his local mosque in Ilford, Essex
He said a mystery man approached him on the street while on his way home and sold him the phone.

Judge Christopher Kinch QC jailed Shah for life and ordered he serve at least 29 years behind bars.

The judge said: ‘It was an utterly terrible attack which inevitably led to her death. It was carried out with callous indifference on a defenceless woman. Mariana Popa did not stand a chance.’

During the trial Bobbie Cheema QC, prosecuting, asked Shah: ‘What was that conversation with Miss Popa about?
‘Did you ask her to go with you? Did you offer her money? Did she say no because you had a bike and didn’t even have a car?

‘Or were you on this night patrolling the area for prostitutes? Did you want to challenge Miss Popa and ask her to get out of that area, to get away from the mosques?’

In his account to the jury, Shah said having women sell their bodies near his mosque or home ‘means nothing’

Jurors were shown CCTV footage of Farooq Shah from the night he murdered Romanian sex worker Mariana Popa, 24
He insisted he was so handsome he would never need to hand over money for sex.

‘I would never, ever do that, I’d never pay money for sex. Look at me - I’m not an ugly man’.

An hour before Shah stabbed Miss Popa, he had robbed Ikran Chohan, a blind man of £400 and his mobile phone at knifepoint.

A bicycle matching the description of Miss Popa’s killer and Mr Chohan’s assailant was also found outside Shah’s flat on St Francis Way.

In a statement Miss Popa’s boyfriend, Nicolae Drezaliu, said the two of them had moved to London just three weeks before she was killed, following the news that she was pregnant.

Jurors heard the couple, who left the Romanian city of Caracal in 2012 for Italy, decided to move to Ilford where Miss Popa had friends.

‘It was while we were in Italy Mariana told me she was pregnant. It was a wanted pregnancy, we wanted to have a child’, Mr Drezaliu said.

‘Two or three nights she worked until 12.30am and then one time she didn’t come back until 9am - she told me she had slept at friends, there was no reason to be suspicious at the time.

‘After she was murdered police told me it was possible she was working as a prostitute on Ilford Lane.

‘I’m still in shock and devastated. Our plans to have a family have been dashed’.

Shah, of Station Road, Forest Gate, east London, was found guilty of murdering Miss Popa and robbing Mr Chohan.

He was given six years in jail for the robbery to run concurrent.
