Ghana agrees to pay N33.8billion Gas debt owed Nigeria by Feb. 2016


The President of Ghana, John Mahama yesterday reached an agreement with the government of Nigeria represented by NNPC GMD Ibe Kachiukwu, to pay off the N33.8 billion owed Nigeria from the gas supply provided by a Nigerian gas company, N-Gas, the main supplier of gas to Ghana’s Volta River Authority through the West African Gas Pipeline.

The National and State House of Assembly Election Tribunal for Plateau State has nullified the election of a member of the state House of Assembly representing Langtang South, Mr Vincent Bulus.

The tribunal also banned the lawmaker from contesting for any election for life.

Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the April 11 House of Assembly Election. Mr. Jackson Danladi, had filed a petition before the Tribunal challenging the victory of Bulus in the election, alleging that the lawmaker was an ex-convict.

Mr. Adesina, in his habitual deceptive and diversionary manner, left the critical issues of governance raised by Sunday’s press conference addressed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, and as usual, embarked on insults, shadow-chasing and fouling of the media space with uncouth language.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Professor Rahmon Bello stated that the family of late Miss Oluchi Anekwe who was electrocuted by a faulty cable must be compensated by Eko Electricity Distribution Plc, EKEDP.

According to Vanguard, Bello who spoke during a press briefing at UNILAG's conference centre said:
"The Federal Government panel findings has established that the faulty cable which caused Oluchi’s death belong to EKEDP and they must pay compensation to the family of the deceased.

A Chicago man has been charged with child endangerment after his three-year-old son was shot and killed by his six-year-old brother while the two were playing "cops and robbers". 

The six-year-old found the loaded revolver on top of the refrigerator and shot little brother Eian Santiago in the head on Saturday evening, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. The older brother's name was not disclosed.

A 50 year old British woman, Jacky Sutton, who was a former BBC journalist, was found dead in a toilet early yesterday morning at Istanbul Airport after missing a connecting flight. She reportedly flew from London to Istanbul but missed a connecting flight to Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Local media reports state she told airport staff she did not have enough money to buy a new ticket. Her body was found a short time later.

US military to conduct missions against Boko Haram inside Nigeria

The U.S. military will carry out surveillance and intelligence missions against Boko Haram inside Nigeria as part of its deployment to West Africa, sources familiar with the plan told AFP.

The counter operations will be carried out as part of the recently announced deployment of up to 300 US military personnel to neighboring Cameroon, officials said.

Former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, Maj. Hamza al-Mustapha, has been compulsorily retired from the Army.

His compulsory retirement, according to a military source, was due to his absence in the Army for a period of over 14 years, while he was away to face the trial over the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, a wife of the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief M.K.O. Abiola.

An International conflict prevention group has warned that if the Muhammadu Buhari administration fails to urgently address the “long-simmering grievances” and deprivation in the oil rich Niger Delta, the region could soon erupt in violence again.

In its latest report issued September 29, the International Crisis Group warned that increasing complaints over chronic poverty and oil pollution as the Presidential Amnesty Programme for ex-militants reaches its twilight, may fuel a renewed rebellion in the region.

Leaders of the groups, Messrs Austin Ozobo and Ebi Wayas respectively,  in a joint statement, said, “By virtue of Section 138 of the Nigeria Constitution of 1999 as amended, the president shall not during the tenure of his office hold any other executive or paid emolument in any capacity whatsoever.”

PORT HARCOURT— Rivers State Commission of Inquiry on the Sale of Valued Assets  set  up by Governor  Nyesom Wike,  yesterday, submitted its report, claiming that N53 billion belonging to the state was allegedly diverted by the previous administration.

In a swift reaction, however, the media office of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, said the purported “missing” N53 billion, was unfortunate and left much to be desired, describing the report as a last ditch trump card “in the hope that it will diminish the former governor’s towering stature as a statesman and honest Nigerian.”

An Associated Press count shows that at least 1,254 pilgrims were killed in a crush and stampede during the hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

The AP’s count of the dead on Thursday includes 17 countries that have offered formal statements through hajj commissions or in state media broadcasts, saying specifically the deceased were killed Sept. 24 outside the holy city of Mecca.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), has ordered the immediate removal of rice from import restriction list and the re-introduction of import duty payment at land borders.

The Public Relations Officer of customs, Mr Wale Adeniyi, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that the restriction was only applied at land border stations before now, adding that the customs boss had lifted restriction on rice at border stations.

Blatter, Platini Suspended from all football activities

Ex-FIFA President, Joseph Blatter and ex-UEFA President, Michel Platini have been provisionally banned from all football activities for 90 days by the organisation’s Ethics Committee.

In further sanctions, FIFA Secretary General, Jerome Valcke, had been suspended for 90 days, while South Korean former FIFA Vice-President, Chung Mong Joon, had also been banned for six years by the Committee’s adjudicatory chamber.

African football leader, Issa Hayatou has been named to take charge of FIFA after former president, Blatter was suspended and “stripped of all duties.”

African football leader Issa Hayatou on Thursday took temporary charge of FIFA after Sepp Blatter was “relieved of his duties” because of his 90-day suspension, the world body said.

Hayatou, 69, is president of the Confederation of African Football, and takes over as senior vice president of FIFA. He has in the past been reprimanded for misconduct by the International Olympic Committee.

“Joseph S. Blatter was relieved of all his duties as FIFA president” after the move by the FIFA ethics committee to suspend him for 90 days because he is under criminal investigation by Swiss prosecutors, FIFA said.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike on Wednesday received the report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry established by his administration to investigate the sale of valued Rivers State Government property and other related matters by the administration of former Governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

Saudi Arabia threatens to execute people for 'tweeting rumours'

Saudi Arabia government has threatened to execute those who 'spread rumours' about the government on social media, including Twitter and Facebook.

According to a state-run website, Makkah Online, there are now laws and departments that censor mass media in the country, and the government has created a rule to punish people for not just tweeting, but also spreading anything deemed to be false. The worst 'rumour-mongers' will be executed, while lesser offenders will be punished with lashes, imprisonment, travel bans, house arrest and a social media ban, a Ministry of Justice source said.

FIFA suspends Sepp Blatter for 90 days

FIFA ethics committee has suspended its president Sepp Blatter for 90 days. Head of the committee,  Klaus Stoehlker, who has advised Blatter in the past, says the committee made the ruling pending further investigations by the Swiss attorney general following accusations of corruption.

He described it as a "pending" verdict, and said no negative finding had been made against the head of world football's governing body.
