President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday said that advocates of the devaluation of Naira would have to convince him how the policy would strengthen the country’s economy, before he would approve it.

The president, who was speaking during his maiden Presidential media chat in Abuja, said his administration’s priority at the moment was getting enough money to pursue infrastructural development projects and fighting insurgency to create the environment for secure investment.

President Muhammadu Buhari has explained that despite the fall in the international price of crude oil, measures taken to block leakages in the nation’s revenue generating agencies would ensure enough cash to fund the N6 trillion budget he recently submitted to the National Assembly.

The president gave the explanation in an interview with Mansur Liman of the BBC Hausa service on Christmas eve. He also spoke on his government’s ‘success’ at defeating the Boko Haram insurgents.

Nigerian government hikes electricity tariffs; abolishes fixed charges

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has increased electricity tariffs, while removing fixed charges for all consumers.

The new tariffs were approved Sunday.

Henceforth, all electricity distribution companies are not to bill customers the fixed charge component, starting from the customers’ next round of billing, the regulator directed.

The death sentences by firing squad passed on 66 soldiers in January and March 2015 by separate General Court Martials have been commuted to 10 years imprisonment each. A statement released on Saturday, December 19, by the Acting Director Army Public Relations Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman reads;

"It will be recalled that 71 soldiers were arraigned on several charges in joint trials. The soldiers were arraigned on several count charges that include Criminal Conspiracy, Conspiracy to commit mutiny, Mutiny, Attempt to Commit an Offence (Murder), Disobedience to Particular Orders, Insubordinate Behaviour and False Accusation, amongst others.

Nigeria yet to decide on joining Saudi-led anti-Islamic-State alliance

ABUJA, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Nigeria has yet to decide whether to join a Saudi-led alliance to fight the militant group Islamic State, a spokesman for President Muhammadu Buhari said on Thursday.

On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia announced a 34-nation Islamic military coalition, a move welcomed by the United States, which has been urging greater regional efforts to push back Islamic State, now in control of large parts of Iraq and Syria.

The Civil Liberty Organization (CLO), has condemned the alleged killing of at least 11 protesters and others severely injured when pro-Biafra protesters clashed with armed security operatives at the wee hours of Wednesday, December 2, 2015, in Onitsha, the commercial city of Anambra State.

Five charged in Australia over terror plot
